Can you boot to a floppy drive?  If not, the BIOS chip is most likely brainless and so you cannot boot.  As a point after, only use the floppy method of BIOS update on the 8000 (actually any C-Series notebook!).  If you cannot get the notebook to boot, you'll need a new motherboard or BIOS chip.  Watch this link for chips to come available.

I can't get it to boot up at all. The screen is blank.  Nothing comes up.  I guess I will try that link you sent for the new BIOS chip first.  Thanks for all your help!  Hopefully the chip works!

Many a times when the system is not able to flash the bios properly, under such a circumstance the system goes blank
on reboot. The problem could also be with the bios ver sent in floppy, which could be damaged.

Therefore I would suggest you to flash the bios once again with the floppy sent to you with the battery and check.

If that does not solve the problem then, download the latest version of bios onto a floppy and flash it.
This would have all the updates for the system.

a floppy and flash the system again.
