I just read how to do this in Smart Computing, December 2002

The first place to look for programs that load automatically is the Startup Folder
Click Start, Programs, Startup. Everything you see in this folder loads automatically when Window starts.

YOu can delete those that you do not want to automatically start by
right clicking the icon and selecting delete (this does not delete the program)

another way:
look at the system tray (located at the far right of the taskbar. you can right click and choose close to get rid of them

and then another way is with the system configuration tool (MISCONFIG)
click start, run and type in msconfig
this will show you precisely what programs and services are load when Windows start

hope this helps. susan

Start|Run|msconfig; the Services and Startup tabs give you most of that info.

Another way to accomplish this is to go to the program itself and, under preferences or options, uncheck start when windows starts or something similar. That would be the first place to look.

If you are wondering what to check or uncheck look at this list.
