If it's under warranty, don't try to fix it - call Dell and arrange a repair.

If it were mine, I would

* remove the battery
* make sure power is connected
* after turning the power switch on, press _F8_ every one or two seconds or so until it gives a black and white menu, then choose "Safe mode"

Tonight my husband decided that I needed some new XP service pack, and he downloaded it and installed it on my computer. I later turned it on, went to check cnn.com and my computer shut off, and refuses to turn back on.

I haven't spilled anything on my computer. I use it mostly for keeping my digital pictures. I baby it, don't knock it around, and have only taken it out of the house once. Why is it doing this to me????

The computer is less than a year old. What can I do to fix it that wont void the warranty? I'm afraid my wanna-be techie husband will try taking it apart and break something.

I hope you make out better than I did. I have had problems with my Inspiron shutting off for over 1 year. Dell kept telling me it was virus related. I even changed out the hard drive at Dell's suggestion under warrenty. It didn't help. I'll run the laptop for about an hour an then it just shuts off. Dell has jerked around for so long now, giving me nothing but a run-around, that I'm now "out of warrenty". Dell's Out-Of-Warrenty department won't even return phone calls or e-mails (it's been over 5 weeks dealing with them). I'm now to the point where my dad is trying to get it fixed at work (Penn State). I know I'll never, ever, buy another Dell product. My advice is to hound Dell DAY and NIGHT and get your problem fixed while still under warrenty.

Good Luck!!!!
