Thanks, but I have already upgraded to Revision A02 when it first came out.

Dave:

I would recommend updating your system's BIOS to the latest version. You can download the BIOS upgrade from our web site, which is located at:

http://support.dell.com/us/en/filelib/index.asp

Next, enter your service tag or choose your system model. This will bring up a list of all files available for your computer. Locate, download, and install the most recent BIOS version from our web site.

To install the BIOS revision you will first double click on the file that you have downloaded. You will be prompted to insert a floppy disk, and the setup program will automatically create a bootable flash BIOS diskette. Once the bootable flash BIOS disk is created, restart the computer with this disk in the floppy disk drive. Your system will automatically do the BIOS update, simply follow the onscreen instructions. After your computer restarts the update has been completed, and you can remove the floppy disk.

Have you configured the system to turn off the LCD when the LCD lid is closed within the "Power Options" Control Panel aplet? What Operating System are you using?

Like I said, the screen turns off fine when I first close the screen.  Its only like 20 minutes later that the screen comes back on when it is still closed.  I have windows XP pro.

I also have WindowsXP Pro on my D800.  I have not encountered your issue.

The issue I have is that sometimes when I open the lid, the screen does not come back on.  This is easiest to trigger by booting the machine and then closing the lid, but I have also had it happen while logged onto WinXP.  This is on AC power.

The "CRT/LCD" buttons on the keyboard do not bring the LCD back.  The only way I can get the LCD back on is the go into Standby (using Fn+Esc), then pushing the power button to bring the laptop back out of Standby.  Then the LCD comes back on.

This is really annoying, because when I leave the lid closed, it is usually because I am serving files to another machine.  Having to go into Standby to wake up the LCD is a major pain, because this affects the file sharing...

I have all of the latest drivers, including BIOS and Dell video drivers...

i still have the problem after upgrading to BIOS A03.  I think it is in some way connected to the computer never going on standby when It is on A/C power.  I see none of these problems when it is on battery power.  I just dont understand why its doing this.

I've determined the reason the screen comes back on is the type of screen saver I choose.  If I use any screen saver that uses the Nvidia card for graphics then like 20-30 minutes later, the screen comes back on and the system wont standby either.  So now I just have the screen saver set to the plain Windows XP one or the blank black screen and I have no problem.  This doesnt make sense to me and it sounds like a Nvidia driver error.  Also I have the same error others are complaining about, which is the screen turning off at the log in screen and then you have to standby it and start it back up to get the screen to come back on.  Oh well, I can deal with the stupid XP screen saver, just doesnt make much sense.  Well, let me know if any one knows something  about this.

i use to have that exact same issue! however, all of a sudden, i am able to use fn+f8 to bring it back, although originally, that didn't work. the only things i've changed that could have "fixed" that are upgrading the bios and upgrading the video card drivers.

My display never turns off when I close the lid on my 8500, see http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_video&message.id=82468. Is there someone who has that mentioned "turn off LCD" as an option in "When the lid is closed:" ? I only have "do nothing, standby, hibernate"

I also have the same problem described above where I close the D800 lid, then sometimes upon opening the lid, the screen stays blank.  It happens about 1/4th of the time, but always at the most inconvenient :).

I like the workaround you mentioned of suspending the machine and bringing it back -- until now, I've been only forcing the power-off (losing everything) and powering back on.  I don't share files and such from here, so at least that's something.

I don't recall which BIOS I'm on, but I just got the laptop recently, so it must be pretty recent.  I just downloaded A11 and will install it after posting if it's more recent.

If there's a known fix for this, please post.
