Reinstall the original Dell customized drivers at Dell Downloads if you installed any non dell drivers. Laptops rarely get driver updates. If your laptop ever does get updated drivers, they must come from Dell, not Intel or any other maker. Go here and let the scanner check for drivers-
Click My Computer, right click the mouse, click "Manage"-Device Manager-Universal Serial Bus Controller, check whether the computer's USB driver appears "!" or is disabled. If it appears "!" or there is no USB For the device, the motherboard driver must be reinstalled. If it is an "X", it means it is disabled. Right-click to enable it.

From your description, it sounds like the mouse or mouse cable is the problem. Try a different mouse.

All of the updates I've given are from Dell..no worries regarding this

Yes it's the mouse most probably.. bcz my phone connects without an issue with a usb cable.
