"Provided you already have the IP, gateway, dns, etc. info while connected with cable modem only....no router"
I am connected to the router to modem to pc while configuring the new settings.......when I ended that sentence with "no router" it may have appeared that I still had the darn thing unhooked. I just meant "no router" while obtaining the IP address. Sorry about that. I'm not very good with intructions.
I'm sorry you're still having trouble. I had this same problem in the beginning before the work-around. (Control Utility indicating I was connected when I wasn't.) That would happen when I entered the MAC address from my cable modem. Then I would re-enter the MAC address of the router and would get the yellow exclamation, not connected. Here are the steps I took to get mine working with the help of some really nice people in the forum.
Reset the router. I used a paperclip to the reset button in back of the router. Holding it down for 5 seconds should reset to default. I held it down longer just for good measure. (I reset my router while connected so I could watch the lights blinking about, just to be sure it was doing something)
Provided you already have the IP, gateway, dns, etc. info while connected with cable modem only....no router.
I then launched the Control Utility / Clicked WEB / Basic Settings / Gateway Mode / Cable/xDsl ISP Settings / I left the MAC address blank and unchecked / made sure I checked the box next to ISP Settings and entered all numbers
Click Save & Restart
That worked for me.....I hope it does for you as well
I myself couldn't get the work around to work nor could I get the TM to clone the Mac address of the original NIC card through which I had originally registered the modem. Has anyone tried cloning the Nic Mac address (physical address through ipconfig) through the TM with any success? This seems to be a Comcast-specific issue and a fairly deep (uncool a friend has told me) interference into what can be a simple operation. I would assume that the workgroup name would have to be included, if the default was changed.
Thanks cayce, if I could only get it to work for my computer.
I did notice my RCA modem has two outputs. One for USB and one for Ethernet. Can I simply run two cables out of the modem? I'm guessing it won't work due to the IP addresses, but I thought it was worth a shot. My wife is ready to kill me about losing her internet connection.

Shawn, I've noticed we have the same RCA cable modem. I wonder why the temp fix works for me and not you? I updated the TM to V1.93 earlier on when I first networked my computers. I don't know if that would have any weight with the problem we're having now. I just noticed that Dell has posted a new driver for the 1184 on the 20th. Wonder what that's about.
cayce, what operating system are you running? I've got ME. I just tried again and it wouldn't work.
Another problem I had when I first installed the True Mobile software is that the monitoring software continously caused operating system errors. Major system crashes every 15 minutes. I finally installed without the monitoring software and everything was working fine till this issue. I have to believe ATT/Comcast did something, since so many people are experiencing this issue at the same time.
If I had an alternative for broadband I would take it in a heartbeat. I'll try updating the firmware, maybe that will help.
Okay...upon a second look....not driver, just a utility wizard and user guides. It was located in the network driver category. Geesh...I need to change these contacts. I can't read.
I'm so glad that worked Shawn. I should have included the reason I updated the firmware in the first place. It was because I kept losing connectivity when I first networked. The issue was solved once I updated. That is up until now. I remember having to try a couple of times before it would update. I hope it works for others as well.
Thanks to all of you diligent, computer literate people who have led us along this dark and winding road! I am actually up and running again (internet and wireless network)! We'll see how long it lasts!
For those of you reading this, I finally got the connection to work last night after more than a week and this morning it was gone again! I know if wasn't the lease expiring since I specifically renewed it before starting the process.
I went through the set up exactly as I had last night and it didn't work today.
Finally, I reset the router, set it up for a dynamic address, validated it wasn't working, then went back to the static address, now it works. 40 minutes later.
Bottom line is there appears to be something screwy with at least my router, but it may be all. You may need to play around a little with this to get it to work.
Does anyone have a brand router that is working with AT&T/Comcast? I can't wait around any longer for Dell to work this out and am returning for refund the Dell TrueMobile router and adapter that I purchased from Dell.
I WAITED 2 WEEKS FOR THEM TO SEND A REPLACEMENT CARD OVERNIGHT, POPPED IT IN THE LAPTOP AND IT WAS WORSE THAN BEFORE. DROPS THE SIGNAL IN 1 TO 4 MINUTES. AFTER THE LAST TECH SUPPORT CALL TO INDIA THEY MANAGED TO GET THE -1184 ROUTER TO WHERE IT WON'T WORK AT ALL NOW EVEN WITH THE DESKTOP ATTACHED BY NETWORK CABLE.
THE 2 WEEK WAIT PUT ME PAST THE 30 DAY RETURN PERIOD. THE CUSTOMER SUPPORT PERSON TOLD ME IN SO MANY WORDS THAT I'M STUCK.
MY BEST ADVICE IS NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM DELL OR IF YOU ALREADY HAVE, RETURN IT BEFORE THE 30 DAY RETURN PERIOD EXPIRES. IF THE 30 DAY PERIOD HAS ALREADY EXPIRED, SAVE YOURSELF SOME GRIEF AND SEEK HELP ELSEWHERE FROM DELL.

jecast, on this link about this problem, there is one report of someone with a Dell 1184, that purchased a Linksys and got it to work.
Additionally, I've been checking with a friend at work that also has ATT/Comcast. His network has been unaffected and he has a Linksys router as well. (His is non wireless).
I'm considering going to Best Buy tomorrow and picking up a Linksys to see if that will take care of it. I hate to go through the hassle and spending the money to replace something I just bought, but it is going on two weeks now and it doesn't look like Dell is making any progress on fixing this.

Just to clarify a statement I made....

you want to disable your internet conection, then reenable it allowing it to pick up the new ip address.
Or from a cmd window: ipconfg /release then ipconfig /renew then ipconfig /all

Cayce - Thanks for the update, the firmware update did it. My network is finally back up!!!!
Now hopefully, we'll get a permanent fix. Funny that Dell Support didn't have me check the firmware version.
