And, sorry to advertise for Dell, but:

I noticed that Dell Canada are offering free delivery on most of their software and peripherals at the moment. I'm not sure when the offer is but you need to search for the Inspiron adaptors. It's a very poorly designed website unfortunately but they're 69$ I think plus taxes.

In the UK they're around twice the price before deliverly!

Hope this helps some people though :-)

I just need to find the one which went first :-s... It went sooo long ago but we just thought it was us... when it happens to three though you begin to think twice.

If you want to know who I spoke to and have the same prob... e-mail me or send me a message and i'll give you details

Ya same thing happened to me. Im out of warranty of course. I had to cut the wires, and sauter them back together, and heatshrink them. Then taped the whole mess together with electrical tape, just for it to work. And thats not an easy task with only 2"s of wire to work with. And the ground wire broke with only maybe a 1/4" sticking out. I know dell used to offer the adapter for under 60 bucks. Seems like the price went up quite a bit. Supply and demand I imagine. Can anyone who has bought a replacement post the cheapest price you found, and the website? Thanks Ryan

Well... in the UK:

battery.co.uk or clonesuk.com

but these still work out at about £60

I tried Dell Canada (dell.ca) as my parents are there now and it went to about £25 each... BIG saving. they also  had a free shipping offer :)

I found a good one for my 8200 on ebay. Might be the best option out there. Heres the link to my auction. That company has more of them

I just went through the "cord gone bad" problem"... again, on my 8100.  I'm still under warranty, so I should be getting a new one soon.

It seems that Dell would save money on replacements if they would make the cord from the box to the computer detachable like the one from the outlet to the box.  That way when the flimsey line breaks near the computer, all they have to do is send out the line and not the whole box.  Any downside to this?

Also, aside from keeping the notebook perfectly still at all times, are there any suggestions on how to keep the line from breaking?

I still haven't had mine replaced. I was told that I would definately have mine replaced about 2 months ago and they haven't done so.

I'm now talking to one of their "Technical Support Managers" or something to get it resolved. Quite frankly, it's dreadful, and they need to do something about it. There are a load of people who have the same problem. In our household we've gotten through:

4 LCD Screens (all dead pixels on my i4000)
2 Display Hinges (on two i4000's)
1 HDD (i4000)
1 BIOS DOA (i8100)
3 Power Adapters (2 x i4000 + 1 x i4100)
1 Touchpad Mousebutton (results in having to replace entire palmrest assembly on my i4000)
2 Batteries (fair enough they're consumables)

Think that's about it... but it's a pretty long list... I had to pay for one of the display hinges, the palmrest assembly and my parents kindly bought me a power adapter when theirs failed too.

I'm a student... I can't afford to fork out £40 every time something goes wrong with it

Well gents and ladies; same problem on power cable number 3 myself in under 4 months. so what do we need to do to get dell to modify their current design or make these power adaptors a lot easier to buy.

I have the Inspiron 2650 and last night I noticed my power cord broken at the connector that connects to the computer.  Lucky for Dell my warranty expired in May.  After 3 hours on the phone and speaking with Tyler, then Tario, then Holly, then Jeff, then Alice, then Mike, then Harris, I was finally able to speak to John the Technical Support Manager.  But guess what- they cant help me.  All they can do is LIE.  All managers are in a meeting, or they are on the phone with other customers, or out department cant help you.  Tario even said he woudl send me one free of charge, but he couldnt find the part number.  What a run around.  With this many complaints- how can they not do something about this issue???

Any ideas?

Larry

Guess what Dell? Thats right, Four power packs down, and now another one has now come loose again !! What a quality product you make. And the way you honestly own up and say "OK, design fault. Here is the new one" just says so much about how the company has changed from the brilliant support friendly company I knew so many years ago to the average computer company that does not care about it's customers. Well done Dell, you are now just as rubbish as IBM, Gateway and Cheap and Nasty Computers Inc.

Hi,

When the computer does not recognise your AC adaptor, was the LED on the AC adaptor blinking? I had this and a blinking AC adaptor (see my message on this board). I found by talking to tech support that it is very likely the mother board /battery charging board is bad. Since the computer runs ok on battery, it must be this small component on the mother board. The cost for replacing it, unfortunately DELL does not sell the charging board separately and I need to buy a new mother board, will be $559. Mine is a I8100 and market price for it now ~$700!

After seeing so many postings about the AC adaptor, I feel it is very likely the connector design problem could attribute to the mother board problem. I found many people have mother board problems. The other issue is the hard drive, which also fail at a rather unusal rate for I8100 compter. My gut feeling is that the cooling system channels heat to the upper right corner where it is  very close to the hard drive, which also generate heat after use.  The result is that the heat on this side could not be effectively dispersed, and accelerate the aging of the components in the visinity. Any power supply is also at this corner. I think this could be terrible design flaw.

If this is the case, DELL should recall the compter with such design. I would love to hear from an expert on this.

Cheers

-Will

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem with my Inspiron 8100, same power adaptor. What can I do? First of all, I need another one. Can I get another one and how? If many people had the same problem, it should be called a flaw. Thanks.

My HD on I8100 failed after 18 months. I am now on my third AC adapter. The computer is developing terrible electric problems. It switches from AC power to battery all the times and randomly shut off the computer when battery run out, sometimes, they even shut off the AC adapter (green light no longer on).

My friend's I8100 HD died aftter 16 months. What terrible machines DEll has to offer. I don't think i will recommend DEll to any of my friends from now.
