Just wanted to speak up and say that my power cord (PA-6) has started to go. My system shipped in 2/2003, and the power cord started breaking a month ago, so unluckily for me, just 5 months out of warranty. It is definitely the power cord - if I wiggle the cord between the plug and the demagnitizer thing, I can (after a couple of minutes) get the AC back on. It is still a big hassle and defeats the purpose of a "laptop" since I can't put it on my lap anymore. Has Dell acquiesced to this flaw yet? Has anyone gotten a replacement cord (besides those on warranty)?
I have had the exact same problem...the power cable from the adapter always seems to deteriorate and soon I have exposed wires right at the connector where the plug enters the back of the system. I have had the adapter replace 4 times! The last time the operator claimed that they had redesigned the plug buy when I got the new adapter it didn't look any different at all?? My power connector on the back of the system has now gone completely bonkers and I had the entire unit picked-up under my extended warranty and I'm waiting to see what happens...
I am now at the end of my 2nd PA-6 power supply on my Latitude. It is the 9364-U model but the US recall notice doesn't apply to this particular one. I now have to buy a PA-9. I believe the p/s died because I wind the cord around the power brick. After a while (about a year) the cord develops "bends".
I bought my Latitude in Israel over 2 years ago so I doubt I have any recourse here - just wanted to share my woes with everyone else who has been bitten by the PA-6 power supply.
I have gone through 12 adapters on two Dell Inspiron laptops, a 2650 which is for my personal use and the company supplied inspiron 1100, between the two computers its starting to get ridiculous. For my personal system the last time the power supply went out, I was luckily under warranty because it also fried the internal power supply on the motherboard. Currently I have to order a new adapter for my personal system and my company one with a compatible adapter has almost started a fire due to the insulation melting away around the edge of the connector. Looks like the pin gave way to a short and melted everything away. This is no longer just an inconvenience for me, if I had not been paying attention to my power status on the system I would not have noticed the problem before smoke started billowing from my adapters cabling. This issue definitely needs to be adressed a little more seriously. The type of work that I do makes a notebook computer a necessity for tracking, and if these power supplies can not handle the constant need to relocate, then a replacement should be available for purchase or exchange to individuals like myself who are constantly traveling. This would aleviate a large amount of service calls to dell concerning this issue.
Just wanted to add that I, too, am now having problems with this stupid OEM connector. It's the connector, because like someone else noted, if I wiggle it back and forth, I can deal with it for a bit until it moves the one micrometer off.
I'm going to check if it's covered by warranty, but if it isn't, I'm gonna see if I can repair it myself using electrical tape and solder.
I just had exactly same problem with the power plug. It was gradually degrading to the point that wiggling it did not help. Since my I8200 is out of warranty, I took it completely apart and discovered that the middle pin of the power connector was not in contact with the motherboard. Careful soldering fixed the problem.
Not sure how many of the complaints here are related to that...
I have an inspiron 5100 and my adapter isnt made by delta, but made by Jet and it melted...what do i do to return it and get a new one? i am still under warranty..
how do I go about getting an adapter. My laptop still has warranty (for about 1 more week- so I need to act fast!), does my cable fall under the warranty?

I agree it is a weak point on the power supply.
I am on my third on this system.
twice on my last one.
I tried to discuss this with Dell and was told no luck,
additionally the new one only had a 90 day warrantee.

After a few new adapters, they no longer work. i have friends recharging my batteries when I need to use this laptop.
Dell has never replied to any of us. Even when I contacted the forum person, that was a waste of time.

This is incredibly frustrating.
