XPS 8700 inconsistent SATA 0 messages - cant boot

Getting this message intermittently -

  1. Sometimes Windows 8.1 boots successfully
  2. Off late, its throwing No Boot device found, SATA 0 : None , SATA 1 : Installed
  3. I disconnected and reconnected SATA 0 cable, and the boot message changed to No Boot device found, SATA 0 :Installed , SATA 1 : Installed.
  4. Earlier when the system had booted, i had run chkdisk /f - but couldnt complete successfully as it said disk not writable.

Currently the system doesnt even boot, even if i try to boot using USB 3.0 drive (Ubuntu) , BIOS UEFI cant even find that option.

Now, when i ran the diagnostics (F12) again, i got Error code 2000-0151.

Validation 98753

Msg : Hard drive 0 - S/N Z1DAP00D, incorrect status = 32

No additional sense information.

What does this mean ?

I need to buy a new Hard drive ? Any recommendations ? I currently have a Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM

This forum post will help. But basically the hard drive has failed. I would strongly suggest an SSD since they are much faster and more trouble free.

A possible list of compatible SSD can be found here but any quality drive such as WD, Adata, Samsung, etc. would be fine.

Did you have a data disk in the optical drive when you ran the diagnostics, to rule out the error being from that drive?

And did you check in BIOS setup to make sure Windows Boot Manager is first on the list of boot options?

Error Code 2000-0151

Validation 996660

Msg: Hard Drive 0 - S/N Z0ZZZ99B,

Incorrect status = 3E

SMART Predictive Failure.

Your drive is completely dead.

Time to reinstall windows on a new blank hard drive.

New 2TB drives are not expensive or hard to come by.  Set bios SATA Operation to AHCI and use OEM windows 10 dvd to reinstall windows.  I recommend getting this now because when they are gone there will be no more FOREVER.

Ontrack Data recovery can get your data back.

Its $350 for diagnosis and $3650 for recovery.

https://www.ontrack.com/services/data-recovery/data-recovery-quote/

they recovered the data from the space shuttle colombia hard drive.  Most are however unwilling to pay to have data recovered.

@RoHe

3E status does NOT come from optical drives ever.

Only hard drives or SSD drives have SMART Status

Also found this online https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-sg/pre-boot-analysis to validate error codes etc.
