HI,

This is not just your problem.  I purchased a Dell Inspiron 8500 and am having the worst time with it because the system will not enter standby or hibernate modes.

Whenever I try to stanby or hybernate (either using the start menu or Fn+Suspend the screen goes off, but the power light will never start to blink and I lose all control of the system.  (i.e. I think something goes wrong when the system is just entering standby).  I do not know what the solution is.  I talked to dell support via phone and they were less than helpful and told me to reinstall Windows XP, which I think is ridiculous.  I downloaded the latest bios A04 and that did not fix the problem.  If anyone knows the solution... please help!

Having just(4 days ago) purchased a Dell Inspiron 1100. At this time I am less than 'inspired' by it's performance.

I am however inspired by the lack of said performance after the darned thing went to sleep for the winter or as commonly known...hibernated..

I'm left with a totally useless heap of rubbish that blatently refuses to restart no matter what inducement  I tried, believe me I've tried just about everything except pulling it's innards out and re-building the thing!

At this time I'm waiting for Dell's UK help line operators to come back to work on Monday ...hope they had a good weekend..I haven't!

It's obvious from reading many of the postings that this 'Hibernation' problem is not a 'one off'. Isn't it time Dell got their acts together and updated their FAQ/Online help? "Press the space bar" indeed! what a load of B/S.

Yeah OK.... I'm annoyed...it seems I've paid good money and ended up with a 'turkey'.....who can blame me?

Hi Guys,

Well the infallible proved infallible.  I reinstalled windows XP... its a pain to have to reconfigure the computer.  BUT! It works like a charm now.  I blame incompetent Dell techs for installing it wrong w/o testing in the first place.  Reinstalling also achieved another significant goal.  It got rid of all the garbage that DELL put on the machine when it came.  I'm pretty happy now.

well, first i had this trouble with re-installing Windows Xp Prof. and getting all the drivers on my notebook. Now I finally screwed my notebook. I re-installed Windows Xp Prof. then i put the "Dell Rescources Cd" into the CdRom drive. Then i had other business to do and left the notebook alone. When i returned the screen was black and nothing helped getting it back. I removed the AC- Adapter and put it again in. Now i tryed to switch it on.... but there was nothing moving.....

So. The Fact IS... i just put a DELL CD !! into the cdrom, did not watch the notebook for about 40 minutes and now i cant turn that thing on. It is completely OFF.....

And though I am wondering about Dell's 24 h business on demand service.... because there are no techs. at any phone number.... or even somebody to talk with about such a problem...

Any1 got any trick for me ? Or any suggestions ?

thanks in advance

Sarah, and any other peeps suffering from nil return from the dead on their Inspiron notebooks.

Following a message from the Tech support peeps I followed their advice and removed and reseated everything from the HDD to the memory module.

Unfortunately the machine was still as dead as a tick although the power light was showing and steady No POST no BEEPS no NUTHIN. Keyboard completely unresponsive. F2 for the BIOS returned no results, only the sound of the fan whirring gave any hint that the machine was not completely dead.

I even dared put the restore CD's into the bay, Switched on and heard the drive fire up...then power down and still nothing else happened...Ho hum!

So I went through removing the memory module again, this time I reinstalled it into the second memory bay ........et voila.!..Bingo!.... Eureka!.... All now works again!

Obviously the memory bay 1 is Unservicable and a return to DELL for repair/replacement will be neccessary as I'm not happy that a memory bay failed in just 3 days! How long b4 bay 2 keels over and I'm stuck without an alternate bay to install the memory?

Thanks for the input I noticed from some other comments that people are unable to get the machine turned back on, I can get it turned back on but need to turn it off first and then restart the machine which is a pain.  I will attempt your suggestion and see if this is successful.

I had this happen intermittently on my I8100...  The exact same thing... However, I did find a solution...

If you can't get the comp back on, try taking out the battery(ies) and AC power... In other words, leave the comp. w/ no power... Give it a couple of minutes.  Then, put the AC power back in (not the battery yet)...  The computer should boot up fine.  I have also noticed that if you press choose to "discard hibernation data and boot from scratch"  that that usually works too.  To do that, you have to press like f5 or something when the computer is "returning from hibernation", or when that white bar is progressing along the bottom of the screen.

The odd thing is is that I only had this problem for about a month.  Before then and since then, I haven't had any problem what-so-ever.  The fact that I usually boot up fine when I remove the battery (on AC) leads me to think that it is a power issue and something to do w/ the battery, but I can't imagine what...

I'm Having problems with my 5100 it went into hibernation on its own and now I can't even get the power light to come on using the power adapter let alone get it out of hibernation. I called Dell for some sulotions but again he didn't seem like a technician, he had me take out the hard drive, battery, and cd/dvd drive and still nothing. The unit cost me $1,800.00 and is only 1 month old new from Dell. I'm very disappointed that I have to send it back to the factory for repair already knowing that all there going to do is send me a "new" 5100. They were quick to take my money for the 5100, but the machine shouln't have these problems if Dell claims to be professionals.

BigDezK9,
FWIW re my Inspiron failing to come back from Hibernate mode, in the end it turned out to be a faulty MOBO memory slot. When I removed the memory and placed it in the second memory bay everything returned to normal. A return to DELL to replace the mobo was therefore required.
Looks as though Dell has got a batch of faulty mobo's out there.
Anyway two days and the machine was returned and has been fine since.

Ok I am having troubles and this looks like the place to ask.

I have an Inspiron 8500.  I have it set to stand by when i close my lid.  Well it must have a mind of it's own because it will work sometime to where it "wakes" back up but other times it wont.  Right now it wont.  What can i do to fix this?

it's locked up  take that

You tried hitting Fn+Suspend?
Battery fully charged?
Low battery level? then try using mains adapter

I for one wouldn't use P/M on lid closure. P/M (Hibernate/Stand-by) as it only puts the puter into 'Neutral' (like your car gearbox) the engine is still running but yer going nowhere and the engine is still using gas. It will 'tick over' for ages with little fuel in the tanks but try putting it into gear and the engine stalls!
When you DO eventually get it 'back to the land of the living' try to avoid using Power management features...the best P/M feature when the computer is not being used is the OFF BUTTON....seems to be a lot of peeps with P/M related probs if yer read through these boards and I am tempted to believe that battery condition *may* be the problem in many cases.

AFAIK to get 'life' back after a suspend/stand by you should hit the space bar or move the mouse...this tells yer computer you wanna resume....again AFAIK opening the lid just...opens the lid. There has to be some other user intervention via the keyboard for the puter to awaken.
You've said that 'sometimes' what you want to happen actually happens...I'm guessing that on these occasions you have knocked the spacebar or touched the mouse pad when you opened the lid?

My computer is plugged in all the time.  If i am going somewhere with it then i turn it off.  So really i am not trying to say power by closing my lid and having it go into suspend.  I am using it for security features.  When my lid is opened it pops up with two different passwords.  But right now nothing comes up and i have to turn it off and back on.  All i am asking is how can i get it to wake up when i open the lid.

So i don't really care about power managment, i am looking for security.

why won't my computer stand by right when i close my lid?

are you new???

I can hit every key I want and it won't wake up.  That's why i said "it's locked up"

"on these occasions"?  How about 90% of the time, and no I just open the lid and my computer is smart enough to know i did that so it wakes back up.  Have you ever worked with laptops before????  Laptops have a little button that tells when the screen is open and when it is closed.  My computer knows when i open the lid, i don't have to he a key or move the mouse.  I'm guessing YOU'RE WRONG.  these doesn't have to be any other user intervention because i already let it know i was opening the lid by opening the lid.

Is there anyone informed on laptops and standby that might know whats going on and how to fix it?

ok ok here it is:  does anyone else have something to say?

Also, can i get none opinionated post's because i don't really care what people think of power managment.  I already know what I like
