The Latitude C610 system was available with a 14.1" XGA (1024x768 maximum resolution) LCD in addition to the SXGA+ and UXGA options. Are you sure your system does not have an XGA LCD?
How do I tell that my screen is XGA or UXGA? I got this laptop from our local IT services, but they are of very little help..
I am positivie on the fact that the same machine in Windows 2000 provided me resolution higher than 1024x768. When I installed Windows XP this resolution appeared to be maximum I can get on my laptop screen.
Click START - SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL - DISPLAY - SETTINGS - ADVANCED - MONITOR then uncheck the box next to "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display". Click Apply and close the Advanced Properties window. You should now be able to adjust the Screen Area above 1024 x 768. If you do this, and a resolution higher than 1024x768 results in a "panning desktop" where you must scroll to view the entire thing, this would indicate you have an XGA LCD.
Unfortunately your service tag appears to be for a system purchased outside of the U.S. Therefore I am not able to determine the particular LCD.

Yes, it's panning desktop, and that means that I have XGA adaptor.
So the question still is - why exactly the same laptop in Windows2000 allows me to use more than 1024x768 without "panning desktop" feature, and in Windows XP I am limited to this resolution?
Did you follow the previous instructions I gave? (Click START - SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL - DISPLAY - SETTINGS - ADVANCED - MONITOR then uncheck the box next to "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display". Click Apply and close the Advanced Properties window. You should now be able to adjust the Screen Area above 1024 x 768.)
If this did not help you may want to try uninstalling your current video driver using the "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel aplet, then reinstall the latest video driver.
You should be able to find and download the Dell validated drivers for your system from the Dell File Library. Just go to our website at the following address:
Insert your system's service tag in the text box labeled "Enter your Service Tag" and click the "Go" button. You will be given a list of files and drivers specific to your system. If you do not have your Service Tag available you can simply choose your Dell system model from one of the drop down menus.
Rance, unfortunately this behavour occurs when I install fresh Windows XP and then install latest drivers from DELL site. It still results in "panning desktop" whenever I choose resolution higher than 1024x768..
This does seem to indicate that your system has an XGA LCD. I would recommend contacting Dell technical support in your country as they should be able to look at your system order information and tell you what type of LCD was originally configured with the system.
Rance, it still doesn't answer the question why Windows2000 and WindowsXP drivers from DELL provide different functionality regarding resolution. If it's XGA monitor, why does it work as desired in Windows2000 and doesn't in WinXP?
I am not going to contact DELL techsupport directly, since it's corporate notebook and local IT support is not helpful at all. Thats why I am trying to get some help from this forum.
If you were definitely able to achieve a full screen resolution higher than 1024x768 with this particular system with Windows 2000, but you are not able to achieve this with Windows XP, then software (driver) corruption is the likely cause. This also indicates you do not have an XGA LCD. If uninstalling and reinstalling the driver do not seem to help, then a complete format and reinstallation of Windows may be necessary to correct the problem.
If it's an XGA monitor, there is absolutely no way it displayed a full screen resolution higher than 1024x768. It's a physical impossibility.

Rance, thank you for your answer. I understand your point.
The only thing that proves it wrong is that on clean system (just installed WindowsXP) with latest drivers from DELL website it happens straight away. On clean system (just installed Windows2000) with latest drivers from DELL website I am able to use resolution higher than 1024x768 without "panning desktop" feature.
That proves the difference between WindowsXP and Windows2000 drivers supplied by DELL.
Can you escalate it to your development team please?
Try updating your system's BIOS to the latest revision, then uninstalling and reinstalling the latest video driver. If this doesn't help I would recommend performing another clean installation of Windows 2000 and see exactly what resolutions you are able to achieve with your LCD without a panning Windows desktop.
I have not been able to duplicate this problem with a similar system configuration. Currently you are the only one experiencing this issue with this driver.

This doesn't sound right. What is the specific resolution you are able to use which is higher than 1024x768 with Windows 2000 installed?

The BIOS is up-to-date - version A13.
The clean installation is being done everyday.
The drivers I got from the web are version 7.83.
Another person who has similar problem posted his message here -> http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=latit_video&message.id=11397
Any ideas other than standard procedures?

What are the resolutions you are able to achieve without scrolling with a clean installation of Windows 2000?
