Same here: 8500 running latest Audio drivers and bios. Speakers emit a hiss when clearly noticeable when no sound is played. Mute speakers either using the mute button on the keyboard or AudioControl/Advanced -> Mute speaker will turn off the hiss.
I did try the 5.10.0.3722 drivers and I could swear that the hiss was not as loud as with the latest drivers.
Please fix that problem as a 2000+ Euro notebook shouldn't have such problems.

This is not normal at all it is poor design if there was this manny people commenting on this there is a problem. logitechs new 680 have the same hissing but they hiss no matter if they are on or off and we all know that logitech is getting in deep trouble with those. To temp stop the hissing i muted my cd audio but this has to be fixed no questions asked.
I have the same problem with an inspiron 8000 and after a repair where the motherboard, the hard disk and the screen were changed the noise is still there.
I didn't notice any difference in using A06, over any other driver released thus far...except for the conspicuous setting that turned off "Power Management" on your CODEC ( Hmmmm.) It had no measureable distinct improvement over the last driver. Go Figure...
I also have a 8500 and had the hissing sound. I say had because now it's gone(not sure why, but it is). This is what I did. Please remember I don't know why this worked and I did not do any additional testing to get the hissing back and try and get rid of it again. I loaded the A06 driver on my 8500 thinking that it might get rid of the hissing. At the end of the driver installation I got an error message (sorry I did not write it down). I rebooted and the speaker hissing was still there. Since I was uncomfortable with the error message at the end of the driver load, I decided to roll back the driver. In the Device Manager I went to the SigmaTel C-Major Audio Properties and under the Driver Tab I selected Roll Back Driver. I then rebooted my 8500. The hissing was gone. Again, I wish I could tell you that I know what happened. I could take a guess and say that maybe the drivers were never loaded correctly. That there is an order that Dell is loading the its drivers that XP does not like. Anyways, try it and see what you get.
folks, check out my thread on a very similar problem on my 600m and you'll see that your approach may not be a 100% solution.
you'll notice that although the hiss/static is gone, the audio quality is noticeably reduced. those of you who listen to music with headphones on your laptop will hear the difference right away, while those who just use the built-in speakers (which are in a different sound category altogether), will probably be satisfied. let me know what you 8500 guys think about this, apparently we are in the same boat here.
i just PMed a bunch of the moderators trying to find out what is going on. it's really in dell's hands now since none of us have been able to come up with an acceptable soluton. i guess i'm impatient but that's just me, i really would prefer to stay informed here as well.
in any case, if dell thinks i'm just going to "forget" about this or give up trying, they are very wrong.
I will preface what I am about to say with the statement that I do have a bad hum when I use the speaker jack, but I do love my laptop and wouldn't give it up.
However, I also want to say that this is not a situation that is limited to Dell. We have six Compaq laptops here at our office that have the exact same issues. I am sure there are others out there with the same problem. We just do not hear about them here.
I think we've all learned our lesson. Next time, buy a something else (Toshiba). I've had a Toshiba Tecra 8100 for 3 years as a development laptop at work. I've used the heck out of it (and took it home every night). NO PROBLEMS whatsoever.
BUY Toshiba. That's what i'm going to do for my parents' next computer. This hiss is anoying and the fact that DELL totally disregards it is BS.

I have been discussing this same problem on a different thread (i600 annoying background noise or something).
Anyway tried rolling back the driver and it worked!
No more hiss.

Unfortunately, I bet you that there is 99,9% chance that Dell is planning to forget you.
They'll probably try to correct the probleme in the next machine build but for what is already out, they never do.
Their new products are good in general but NO AFTERSALE SERVICE is the rule and for your satisfaction you better buy another make next time.
