Is there an option in the BIOS that says something like "keep USB ports enabled for charging portable devices even when computer is off" ? If so, try disabling it.
Well, static-electricity killing electronics (or even slightly reprogramming eproms) is a very real thing. Maybe something actually got permanently damaged.
I've seen (high voltage / low current) lightning blow a hole in my modem once, so I'm not so surprised with stuff like this any more.
Thanks for the response. Very strange indeed. I had a look in the BIOS and seen no such option. Tried plugging my phone in via the front USB ports when computer was powered off and there's no power running to them.
