Ah, thanks. Didnt think of checking the downloads section.

The system with the Alps had the correct driver. I noticed the response was not as good as the Synaptics, even after playing with all of the settings. I have seen similar post to this in these forums. May be the new Alps are better.

Anyone care to comment on experiences with the Alps on the 8500/8600?

Thanks.

I currently have a i7500 with an Synaptics touch pad. I have used the Alps touch pad on other Inspiron models and have noticed the Alps is not as responsive as the Synaptics. Adjusting settings in control panel makes no difference. Can someone let me know which the 8500/8600 has?

Thanks!

A simple check of the Downloads Tab shows that both systems have the Alps, as that's the only driver offered.

Perhaps the computer you tried didn't have the Alps driver installed.

After about a weeks usage I find mine to be a little difficult to use. Actually, it responds pretty well and other folks in the house like it. I am so used to a mouse that I think it just takes getting used to.

Got the i8500 about ten days ago and have to say I am satisfied so far.

I concur - I carry and use an optical mouse except when I am using it on my knees.  I just do not like using these touchpads.  And my 4000 has the Synaptics with the latest driver loaded.

i like the shiney gloss feel of the synaptics to the matte of the alps.

Other than that, both seem as easy to use and just as responsive.
