I'm having the exact same problem. I even turned off hardware acceleration in my display settings. I've had this problem since day one myself.
I thought at first that the problem was with some sort of setting in my Cool Edit Pro. But it's not - windows sound recorder does the same exact thing.
I've done everything myself and have had no luck. my guess is that it's some sort of audio driver that's causing the problem. I see your post is a little old. Have you remedied the problem at this point? If so, how?
Well i contacted dell and they told me to format my computer. I personaly dont no how this would have fixed it but it did and i am glad to say that i have not had a single click sound for at least a mounth. i hope this helps you.
I'm not going to do that unless they ask me to as I have already customized everything the way I need it, plus I've already sent all my important files over to that machine.
They've so far had me try new drivers, plus turn off everything that loads on startup. Still no luck. In fact, I have a ton of clicks/pops when i play CD's, mp3's and DVD's. It doesn't make any sense. Especially when it's new.
And I really don't understand why formatting would fix the problem. But I guess we'll find out.
My friend just ordered a 1000, so until I get my hands on it, I won't be able to tell you wether or not the installer works or not, or if you have to extract the files and update them via device manager, they are the latest drivers I could find for the ADI soundmax chipset.
Tried this link and it didn't do the trick. Have been exchanging many emails with Dell's Tech Support people and they don't seem to have a clue. It's insane because looking at this forum, everybody that buys this freaking model of computer has this exact same problem, right out of the box. But they're not gonna admit it and they've got no idea what to do about it. We've all been robbed, looks like. Conned. Maybe it's our own fault for buying the cheapest model. Maybe the more expensive ones actually work properly when they send it to you. At this point, seems to me the best option for everybody in this position is just to return the freaking computer and try Gateway or something.
I bought two of these 1000s and advised a friend to buy a third. My two were for Christmas presents. I have been on tech support for over an hour and I have to say that I am shocked at the level of service that Dell provides these days. The service people had no idea about the posts on this forum! They painfullly put me on hold a bunch of times and led me down several wild goose chases for fixes.
Dell has apparently thrifted their technical support. I have owned a bunch of Dell products throughout the years and this may be the last straw. I used to think Dell differentiated itself with its quality and service but I doubt it now. But then again, I fell for the low priced version. You get what you pay for apparently.
As far as formatting the hard drive goes. They never advised me to do that and I will not go through that hassle unless they can explain technically why that makes a difference.
I am still within the 21 day window so my best bet is to get a refund and then buy a computer from a real store. A Toshiba or a Sony might be a better option.
Dell customer care messed up my pick up for these systems and I am on the phone yet again with them. What a joke. This is some of the worst service I have ever had. I am really shocked it is this bad with Dell. The last person I talked to said the phone connection was bad and I needed to call back. I think that is what they do when they don't understand the conversation. I would pay extra for the guarantee of customer service that is in the US. This outsourced support is horrible! Does anyone know of a vendor with US customer service?
it realy easy and it the same for all inspiron. here is part of an email that the dell suport team sent me i hope this helps you. * Install Window XP. Refer to the following link for the detailed steps.
Hi, im from the UK and recieved my inspiron 1000 earlier today
i had the same problem, i had already read this post (and others like it) prior to my own machine arriving and surprise surprise i had the same thing
anyway on the phone to tech support, who firstly thought it was something to do with the power adapter and that only using the battery would solve the issue, then talked me through formating the drive, after i mentioned users on the US dell comm forum had been told to format, with success,
done the format and guess what?, no sounds, no flickering, clicking static. it was annoying in that i had only just updated to sp2 (mine did not have sp2 as standard) and have to do all that again as well as rearrange my own files but its a solution.
The instructions you gave me say that I need the windows xp disk to format my computer, but I never recieved one with it. Was I supposed to get one?
I called customer service and they told me that I would need to purchase the disk, but that just sounds completely odd to me. Every computer should come with a restore disk, right?

I just got my computer yesterday, and I'm having the same problem.
I'm willing to try formatting it. The problem is I have no idea how to do that.
Can someone tell me how to format this computer?
Thank you.

Okay,
So I was up until 1am talking to a tech at Dell.
He had me reinstall drivers and restore my computer, but nothing worked.
So, they're just going to send me a new one. I really hope that one doesn't have the same problem as well. I'm really getting annoyed with this.
Thanks to everyone that offered info, I appreciated it :)
