The C600 is an older system based on a 440BX chipset, using a mobile P3 CPU.

The C610 uses an Intel 8xx chipset, and a mobile P3-m (Mobile Tualatin) CPU.

The processors are not interchangeable.

Is this what makes the C610 fan run all the time while the 600 doesnt?

While the processor range on the 610 tops out faster, the fan should not run all the time. What do the Dell diagnostics have to say?

The big difference between the 2 models is the C610 uses a 133MHz bus where the C600 uses a 100MHz bus. This speeds up the whole PC.

No the fan should not run that much. I suspect the heatsink is not picking up the heat from the CPU causing it to get hot and turning the fan on.

Well if yourn C60 boots just as fast as your C610 there is something wrong with the C610. I have own all models at the same time, C600, C610 and C640. The C640 does not boot much faster than the C610 but both the C610 and C640 boot much faster than any C600 I have owned.

They all seem to have this problem, the ones I have owned and worked on in the 10-40 series.

The really sad thing is there might be a 'hard speed' difference between the 2.4 G 40 I have and the 00 P 850, but in all honesty, they boot the same speed, surf, open programs, EVERYTHING, there is not a single noticable improvement other than the 1280x1024 screen res.

This caused me to write a epinions review on the 40 telling people to stay away from it.  As you upgrade in the c series, they get hotter and nosier but they don't perform any better.

Sad, I love the Dell product but..... my love is waning.
