No sound after reinstalling Win XP Home on Inspiron 5100

Question

I lost the hard drive on my Inspiron 5100. I replaced the harddrive and reinstalled Win XP home and now do not have sound. I loaded the drivers and applications from the Dell Resource CD but not in a particular order. After reading this message board today, it appears the drivers have to be reinstalled in a particular order.   Does anyone know if I can reinstall the drivers in the proper sequence after I reinstalled them not in the proper sequence. Do I have to start over with loading windows or is there another solution? Thanks for your help!

hi, i am not aware of having to load the audio drivers in a particular order, if you go to control panel / system / hardware / device manager / do you have yellow question marks showing under 'other' or 'sound, video controllers' indicating the drivers are not loaded properly?    try going to the dell support web site and typing in your service tag to get the latest drivers for your laptop also.

I think I can answer your first question with "No" since I am experiencing the same problem as jgleaves did.

Everything looks fine under the device manager. And for me, when I try to hook up an external speakers, there is sound.

At last, since I have just downloaded the lastest audio driver today, I don't know think the latest driver work for me either.

I apologize that I couldn't help out. I was just responding to a common problem that I had.
