Inspiron 7500: Trying to 'reinstall' touchpad on XP machine

Question

Original computer had W98SE.  I upgraded to XP a while back.  I use the touchpad exclusively.  Now my System devices show  just as a PS2 compatible device.  No mention of Synaptics.  Thus when I want to reconfigure touchpad movements, I no longer have the Synaptics menu and options. I tried to reload the touchpad using my 7500 System Software CD, but since I now have XP, it won't accept the reloading. I checked Dell Support for Input Devies downloads for my service tag and came up empty. Is there a Synaptics touchpad driver that I can safetly download for the 7500 that will run under XP? TIA

TomM2002, Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum. The Inspiron7500 never shipped with Win XP so we won’t have drivers that are specifically tested for that operating system.

Well, thanks for the reply, although a sad one.

Do you think I would have any great risk, if I first created a Restore Point, then downloaded an xp compatable current Synaptics Touch pad driver? I know, you can't recommend that, but have you heard of anyone doing it successfully, even if not officially verified by Dell?

I also upgraded my 7500 to WinXp. I was able to get my touchpad working right by searching Synaptics in the Downloads section. I found: Input : Synaptics Touchpad, Driver, Windows XP, Multi Language, Multi System, v. 6.0.7, A01 with the file name:  TPA01WXP.EXE.
