Go to the control panel, select network connections.  Right click wireless network connections and select Properties.  Go to the wireless network tab.  Make sure your network is the only one listed or at least at the top of the list of preferred networks.  Also make sure "Use windows to configure my wireless network settings".

The computer has already been configured that way.

Change your router's SSID name and try a different channel.  You have neighbors with wireless.

no change

But I switched off 'let windows do...' and now it is much faster.

Any other tipps are still welcome.

It's interesting. On my 8200 with TM1300 MPCI, if I switch off Let Windows Manage, it takes forever to make a connection to the network and it is a flaky connection. Others have just the opposite result. It would be interesting to know what the differences are.

My specs: Dell Inspiron 8600

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP1
  • Intel Pentium M Processor 1.7GHz
  • 512MB 333MHz DDR SDRAM (2x256MB)
  • 60GB Ultra ATA HD
  • 128MB DDR Nvidia Geforce FX Go 5650
  • Soundblaster Compatible Sound with Wavetable
  • Integrated 10/100 Ethernet Network Card
  • 15.4" WSXGA
  • 4x DVD + RW
  • 56K Modem
  • Dell TrueMobile 300 Bluetooth Module
  • Dell TrueMobile 1300 802.11 b/g 54Mbps Mini-PCI Wireless Card
  • Microsoft Office 2003 Professional
  • Roxio VideoWave Movie Creator
  • Cyberlink PowerDVD

I do remember when UNCHECKING the 'Let Windows configure...' it wouldn't connect to the internet. Then I would save the set-up and restart the notebook. Result: it connects straight away correctly and seems fast and stable. Will do some more testing tonight.

You may be having conflicting wireless managers. Often a driver will install a manager for the device, but XP has its own. Wih my Netgear PC Card, I had to remove the Netgear wireless manager from the startup folder. I don't know how the Dell card gets set up, but you might want to check and see if another wireless manager is starting. If so, try removing it and see if that clears it up.

Sorry for asking but what do you mean by wireless managers? Where can I find them or  see if the have 'started'? What sort of name do they have?
