It doesnt work because there isnt support for it in the 5100 BIOS. I really doubt Dell will ever support it unless they offer the M9 as an option in the 5100. Thats the only reason why us Inspiron 8000 owners got to upgrade our ATI cards to Nvidias. Dell started offering the 8000 with the Nvidia card so they had no cjoice but to suport both cards in the BIOS.

As a note. Take what Dell tech support people say with a grain of salt. Most dont even know about computers.

Well guys, everything works... the old ati 7500 is back in and the system is blazing fast again as it were before.  So nothing was damaged.  I think also its a bios issue.  Its like the mobo getting flashed to support higher processors.  I don't think dell will do it, because they want you to buy the 5150.  I think we just need to write to them?

by the way... dells return policy on these things is: 10 days for credit only no refunds opened or unopened

oh before i forget... this is the problem when booting: 1 long beep, 2 short ones. which means:

1 Long 2 Short beeps - The video adapter has failed, or the video memory is having a read/write failure. Try reseating the video card. If the video card is a PCI video card, try moving it to another slot.

the only thing that hurts this system i think is the vid card... i want to return it too... only i got such a smokin deal on it would be stupid.

its not a game machine... i knew that when i bought it, so i was so counting on this vid upgrade to work.  Can a moderator confirm or deny anything in response to supporting the 9000 on the 5100?

a moderator replying to this post and telling us the real deal and our chances about it is another miracle that probably wont happen too lol, oh well the ride was fun while it lasted... it was really exciting ... i actually felt like we had some hope cuz ive been praying for a better video card to come out, i knew it wasnt a gaming machine either but i thought the graphics card issue wasnt a problem and that could be solved to make it one.. guess not my luck ran out, im probably going to try to sell my laptop on ebay or something

Here is an idea...

the ati cards are 64 bit and 128bit

ati 9000 32mb is 64 bit and the 64mb is 128 bit

ati 7500 16mb and 32mb are both 64bit

might the bios only support a 64bit card rather than 128bit?  It could be a workaround... darickster, why dont you order a 32mb ati 9000 and try it... i tried the 64m bversion

The only thing that would probably work would be flashing the 5100 with the BIOS of a 5150. However, if something goes wrong, the motherboard is dead.

nope, im not going to bother with that hassle, the whole point in this was that i wanted a 64mb video card so i could game... all the games i play require minimum 64mb of video card in the first place so there would be no point in me getting the 32mb version, it may be beneificial to someone else but not me... u guys should just wait a couple months maybe a hack might even come out who knows... i doubt it but u never know, im not sure what im going to do, maybe ill sell my laptop and dish out an extra 600 bucks to get an 8500

regardless i dont think thats the problem, these cards are just not configured to work on our 5100's, it could be an ati 6500 8mb video card, its not configured in the bios so it wont work anyway, the only thing that could possibly make the cards work is a bios upgrade

NOPE IT WONT WORK, if you read the followups on the thread that you posted, the guy is trying to upgrade his video card to our ati 7500 5100 video cards (lol its funny to see he is trying to upgrade to ours, while we are trying to upgrade to 9000's), the 1100 and the 5100 have the SAME BIOS (A6), and he still has problems, so now i dont even think the flashing would work either, maybe its the way its built, a tech support guy even said the 5100 isnt capable of using the 9000 thats why they made the 5150 enhanced because all of the requests for a better video card with such a great system... at this point i am highly doubtful it will work UNLESS DELL DOES SOMETHING DIRECTLY ABOUT IT, looks like we are stuck big time.

Come on DELL. You have 5100s, you have 32 and 64 mb 64 and 128 bit 9000s

Tell us what works. This has to cost you big money. I have ordered and returned

hundreds of dollars of equipment. All this to try to answer for myself what works.

Please tell us if it works or not. Otherwise we will happily continue costing you money.

Your call. It is stupid to provide modular video cards and not provide video cards to

fill those slots. Do your cutomers a favor, before they cease being your customers.

I tried and external monitor.....nope neither. From here, I'm considering more drastic measures but I need to do more research. It will involve a force flash to a 5100 but I have yet to look into this....On the older series I was able to flash between lattitude and inspiron models( Ex. I flashed a C800 to a Inspiron 8000 ). "

Since he did the flash between hte LAT-C800 to the Inspiron 8000 do you think it would be possible to "force flash" a 5100 w/ the 5150 BIOS?

you could do that...

here are 2 options

1. it works , the flash is successful, the 5100 can now read the ati 9000 with the 5150 bios.

or

2. it fails, and your system is trashed rendering it useless, if there was some kind of safety backup bios i would do it but im not sure if there is or how that works, im not sure i want to risk it, maybe someone else will or we can just wait for some professional to see if its possible, we'd have to do alot of research before we try anything, so far i have not heard of someone disabling their system trying to flash a bios, it simply said unable to, restoring old bios but that was for a desktop pc and i dont know how it works for laptops.

LETS NOT FORGET, THERE IS NO 5150 FLASH BIOS YET, its so new its not even ready for download (so i heard), so there is nothing to flash the 5100 with yet, keep in mind the 5150 has different specs (more voltage required for a diff processor, better memory, etc) so it still might not be compaitable.

ati is no help, they are bunch of monkeys, I emailed them for their ati 9000 m9 manufacturer's part number, and they wouldnt give it to me.

as it is, the card is simply outdated, and the least dell can do is work on updating the drivers to the latest catalyst suit.

imagine, this machine with a good vid card... it would do well with games since the processor is a desktop p4 with 533 mhz frontside bus.

Are there any Nvidia boards that may work with the 5100?
