i have the same problem with my dell inspiron 1100
my warranty ended last september, and in october my laptop stopped booting up
i have been talking with dell about problems booting since the summer and each time they have been useless, when i called in october they said it would cost $600 for a replacement motherboard and $200 / hour labour
a $1000 computer should last longer than a year
i suspect the problem with our inspirons is due to heating, and that our CPUs are fried
unfortunately you can't buy 400MHz celerons anymore, and dell tech support doesn't seem to know if their motherboards can handle 533MHz celeron-d chips
Come on guys, I have a brand new Inspiron mother board sitting on my desk right now from DELL and it was only $285.00 plus shipping, someone is hosing you if you are paying $600.00. Also I found MANY Inspiron 1150 mother boards of all places on E-Bay ! going for $115-$125 at close of auctions. Plus the dang Inspiron 115 can be gotten bare bones complete PC for $595 in recent catalogues. My Inspiron went POP and nada.... replacing the mother board tomorrow...major surgery...
dell's tech support (after the 5th or 6th call that week) wanted $500-$600 for the motherboard, plus $200 per hour labour, plus shipping
i confirmed this price later on in the week with a different parts shop person
you cannot find an inspirion 11xx motherboard on ebay for under $300 CAN before end of auction, i know, i've tried
i also tried a new celeron 2.4ghz socket 478 desktop model chip in my broken 1100 and it didn't work, so that was another $100 wasted
i'm finished with dell; i just bought my girlfriend an asus barebones notebook (M6N, a real beauty) and am currently looking at toshibas for myself
i've already gutted the entire dell notebook, now i'm trying to salvage the TFT 14" LCD as a secondary monitor on my desktop .. hoping to put my electrical engineering degree to good use :0)
I had a similar problem and it was the Inspiron motherboard. The motherboard is available BRAND NEW from DELL price delivered is $285.00. The instructions on DELL's e-manuls.com is VERY VERY complete and VERY easy to follow, step by step removal and replacement of the motherboard with true 3-D picture illustrations I was SHOCKED to see how complete these instructions are. The complete job only took me 1 hour from start to finish to remove & replace the motherboard. No need to pay DELL or anyone else $200/hour to do this job. a simple set of tools (#1 & #2 philips screw driver, a small standard screw driver a pair of long nosed pliers and that is ALL you nee. I sugest a baking muffin pan of 6 pockets (muffens) array to seperate and label the 4-5 different size screws as you remove them to make replacing them in the right spot easier they all are VERY similar and it is a tough guessing game if you don't track them on removal for replacement (I KNOW THIS NOW).. Enjoy and if you need help e-mail me
