Modems and Telephone Cables and Connectors... Oh My!

Question

I'm in the middle of setting up a new computer (both this one and the new one are from Dell and have Windows XP). I've gotten to the step that says, 'If you have a modem, connect a telephone cable to either of the modem connectors. Do not connect the telephone cable to the network connector.' I've attached the telephone cable to the correct place on the computer, however I can't quite figure out where the other end goes. Does it go on my modem, or somewhere else entirely? It's necessary to turn both computers on at once so I can transfer files.   On the off-chance that I'm not the only one on here this late - Please answer!

The other end of the Cable goes to the Telephone Jack on the wall.  You cannot connect the phone cable directly from one PC to another.  It would not allow you to transfer data by doing that.
