Hey,

Well after I read your post I wanted to benchmark mine with 3DMark2001.  As you can see I got a score of 7290.  This was with my GPU OC to 270 and the memory OC to 220 - completely stable.  I had done a clean install awhile ago....maybe this is part of your problem??

Test run at 1024x768 32bit color

hrmm, ran 3dmark 2001 again, here are my results

a little better this time, though still off by 2000 or so points. Im running the 9000 with moded cat 3.10 drives from www.ati.com. i'm going to try overclocking it to your specs, but i've noticed heat problems already (middle of keyboard gets warm after running 3dmark.)

actually, i think i'm going to do a clean reformat, i've been meaning to for some time, just never had enough spare time.. we'll see if that helps.

ok, after reformat, reinstall, and using rage3d to overclock the m9 to 270.0Mhz core and 219.38Mhz memory, plus using the rage3d 3dmark2001 profile.. my results are... normal

What I would like to know is after reading all 39 pages. Can this been done. I think this entire post needs to be summed up into what exactly needs to be done if it is possible.

So far I gather that I will need to update my bios to the A26 before I can install the 9000. Do I need to flash every bios update in order, or can I go straight to the A26?

My only other question is will I see a major difference in performance. I won't be using this laptop mainly for gaming. But I would still like to game on it a little. But I do use 3DStudio MAX and AutoCad 2000 a lot. So I need something that is going to run decent with it. If only I could get an FX5900U in my 5100 like my PC

Thanks

Kmak1, I'm having trouble getting my 3dmark2001 score past 5500 and my scores are very similar to your original ones. Just wondering, when you say reformat do you mean hard drive or something else? What specific steps did you do to get that amazing 2000 point boost?

yeah, i was amazed too

I completely erased my hard drive, and did a clean install of windows xp pro, then i put in service pack 1, and all other critical updates before loading all the dell drivers. next I downloaded the cat3.10 drivers from www.ati.com and moded them with the dhmod tool so they would install on my system. after that, i went into the display control panel, and under advanced, i turned both the direct3d and openGL settings to "high performance." Finally, i downloaded rage3d (www.rage3d.com) and set the profile to 3dmark2001 and overclocked the core speed to 270.00Mhz, and memory to 219Mhz.

That was for the 7546 score.

I ran a benchmark with the card at default settings (238Mhz core, 192Mhz memory) and got just over 7000.

3dmark is kinda decieving though, as i still have trouble running some games (Rainbow 6: raven shield, and need for speed underground)

I dont see how u can have a probelm with need for speed underground cause I play it with the M7 32mb and it runs fine except for the ocassional lagg every few races.  I have the no-cd crack installed but i dont know if that helps u any

What the !!!! I've tried to order the M9 card twice from dell spare parts, and they've cancelled my order twice. Then I call in to customer service and they refuse to order me the card! I was told that their computer will not let them place the order because the M9 is not compatible with the i5100. If you've ordered the Y0708 and recieved it, please tell me how. I'm hitting a brick wall with these noobs!

I can't believe you can't say "m0rons" on these boards!

lol yeah they gave me a hassle the first time I tried ordering too. When they ask for your service tag just tell them you don't own a dell and you're buying the part for a friend who owns a 5150. They didn't give me an hassle about it. So easily fooled, it's a wonder how they made these computers at all....

I thought they would try something like that when I ordered mine the other day. So I told the lady I didn't have the service tag number. Then she asked me for my customer number, I gave her that. Told her what I wanted and then she ordered it.

Thats weird!  I had no problems at all, even when I gave the woman my tag number.  The only weird thing she asked me was how did I find out about this upgrade and I told her on this community forum.  I mean its one thing to point out the part was not made for this computer, but its completely another to have the sales person to refuse your order.  Maybe Dell is starting to crack down on this?  Stupid if you ask me, they will just be losing out on more money???

yeah, about need for speed.. it's weird. I played it on my old M7 32mb before i got the M9, and it was fine. I put in the M9 and now it is barely playable on some tracks. lol. all details are at low.

i just gave my service tag to them when i ordered, when the lady asked me what it was for (she asked if i was using it to upgrade my OS ) I just said I was upgrading. (she then tried to sell me more ram since i didn't report to dell that i've upgraded that from 256mb) I didn't have a problem, when i asked her to read the part's description back to me, she even said it was "for inspiron 5100"

Inspiron 5100:
Pentium 4 2.4Ghz
640MB Ram
40GB hard drive
ATi Mobility Radeon 9000 (64MB)
normal XGA display

Where do you get prices for your video cards? I'm considering upgrading to the nVidia 5200 and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the cost or not. If you guys say your ATI 9000s are around $130, I'd imagine the 5200 would be a bit more.
