I did the very same thing for the first week I had my 2001FP. I didn't have any problems, but then again it was only a week. However, I see no reason why a long term setup would porduce any problems. Go for it!
I've done the same thing with a dual input CRT and with a switchbox at my house. Works great, saves having a second monitor, and you're able to use the DVI on the main machine!

You do not need a switchbox.
