Your problem is the same as mine, to the letter: Inspiron 8600 & a Radeon 9000 with a driver that Half Life 2 says is outdated (and judging by how the game plays, they're right), but that Dell refuses to update. Unfortuately, when I followed the advice to go to driverheaven.net, I couldn't get their solutions to work for me.
Does anyone know of another site with driver updates for a Radeon 9000?
Or, would purchasing another video card do the trick? I'm pretty novice, but I suspect it wouldn't, because these cards have to be taylored for their machines specifically by the vendor, right? That's what I'm taking from what the ATI site is saying. So where does that leave painkiller and me, and the growing number of poor saps with our predicament?
PJHOF - Yep, I can help you out, if you haven't done so yourself already. Try seaching on the net for "Omega Drivers". They're at www.omegadrivers.net
They work great!!! Work on all mobile ati chipsets. Half Life 2 wouldn't even run before I installed these. Well, I'm far into the game so, that lets you know how well they work.
You're absolutely right - the omega drivers fixed me right up; so far this game is blowing my mind.
I'm grateful that independent people are so generous about updating drivers since Dell doesn't see fit to do so, even on systems that are only a year old!
