go to control panel then double click power options change settings on the left side where it says when computer is pluged in to never on all then click the hibernate tab and make sure it isnt enabled if it is uncheck box i had a 9100 before i got my xps and had the same issue and that fixed it

Thank you Jeff for you reply. I checked my control panel, it was exactly as you said.
i read the owners manual and I found something really good which I was not aware of surpirsingly. To come out of the standby mode, the power button has to be pressed slightly once it seems. I have to try it when it hits next time.
Happens on my Inspiron 5100 too. I haven't tried the power settings idea but I just press Fn-Esc (Suspend) and then the power button as soon as it goes down - this solves the problem and doesn't drop me from the network connection.
that is the main reason i made thees changes is because of my network conection because i stay conected all day and most of the time my pc is pluged in runing on ac i find you only need the standby and hibernate and all set only when pc is runing on batery power to me it makes no sence to have theese settings set on ac

I hit that problem once again today. even if I press the power btton slightly it did not come up. I have to try the second option pressing fn and power button. very frustrating if the screen does not come up at times the more i want to see something immediately. let you guys know if this works.
