You may want to try removing the printer in Safe Mode and see if that will allow a fresh install of the printer. With the computer shut down, disconnect the printer from the computer. Start the system and press the key when the system accesses the hard drive after the BIOS has finished loading, but before the Windows XP splash screen appears; pick Safe mode from the list and allow Windows to boot. Try to remove all printer software and drivers. Check Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel to make sure no printer software is listed and also remove any reference to the printer in the Device Manager. Restart the system and allow it to boot into normal mode and then follow the normal installation procedure for the printer, connecting the printer when the software asks you to. Check to see if this allows you to scan.
