Chicki,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Try running the Dell diagnostic test on this portion of the hardware.  You may be able to fix the problem by reinstalling the touch-pad drivers.

I did run a diagnostics and it turned out OK, but I have not tried to reinstall the drivers for the touch pad. How would I do that?

Thanks so much for your help

Chicki,

First, you should download the latest drivers from the Downloads tab.  Choose the file that corresponds to your pointer and then follow the directions included with the download.

Thank  you for choosing Dell.

Well, I went and downloaded the drivers and it worked for a while. Now, it's happening again. I went to the bios and tried resetting those, as well as redownloading the drivers. Unfortunately, it did not work this time. Any other ideas of what I can do? It is frustrating to try to left click and have everything pretty much stop because the pointer has "grabbed" whatever was last clicked and won't let go.

Thanks again for your help

Hi again!

I'm still experiencing problems with my touchpad buttons. I have reinstalled the newest Synaptics driver for my computer, and it still isn't working properly. My Hardware warranty runs out in March, would this possibly be covered by that warranty? I've had to use an external mouse to work my cursor, and that has worked ok, but I would like to have more freedom from the excessive wires. Anyway, I hope I can get this all figured out. :smileyhappy:

I wanted to let you know that I was able to simply enable the tap click on the touchpad and I disabled the buttons. Now I don't have the problems. I updated (again) my synaptic driver, then I did a search for an updated version (which updated it further and gave me the option to disable the buttons) I tried to download the newest bios but it said my system was protected (which I honestly don't understand since I can get into my bios without any problem, and it shows that the passwords are disabled-I don't even get a chance to enter the password when I try to install the new bios, so I simply gave up on that option). I still would like to know, however, if this button lock is a hardware problem that is covered by my warranty.

thanks so much for your previous help. I really try to search through all of the posts before I  ask for help, but I just couldn't find anything that answered my questions or went beyond what I already had asked. :smileyhappy:

You guys are great!
