It's gone and good riddance.  The 5160 is a more expensive knock off of the original 1100/1150, but heavier, marginally faster, and lots more expensive.

it's gone ...  the p4 is not a good chip for a notebook ....  future systems will either by p-m's or cheap celerons

The 5160 is still on the Dell website (both in Europe and the US). But there's also a 6000, which is styled like the 9200. Would this be the replacement for the 51XX?

Agree with the other poster. The P4, whatever they want to call it (It's still a desktop CPU), was a bad CPU for notebooks and every maker had problems with heat in the notebooks it came in. Thank god they have canceled it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the XPS model go away also.

I think the 6000 series is a replacement for both the 5160 and 8600.  It looks to be a fairly nice machine and would be my second pick after the 9200.

I was not impressed with the build quality of the 1100/5160 machines.  It's like a Buick; it does the job but isn't very graceful.  of course, for the price I paid for my 1100 I can't complain a bit.  Thanks to Dell notebooks are now "disposable".

The 6000 appears to be the 5160's replacement. It is NOT the 8600 replacement - that will be another D-chassis model, likely a twin to the replacement of the Latitude D800. Because the business models continue for years with the same chassis for easy parts interchangeability, expect it to appear on the same D-chassis as the 8600/D800 model.

Intel has publicly stated that it will phase out all mobile P4s. You will likely continue to see desktop CPUs used in high-performance notebooks, but they will be bulky models like the XPS, designed for all-out performance.

The thing I've noticed with the Inspiron 6000 though is that it comes with Intel integrated graphics.... now I know that the Geforce 5200 was not a great card, but I believe that it's still better not to share system RAM with the video card.... my 2 cents there.

And I completely agree with you guys about the P4 chip. Needs be gone.

Rick

You're right on that Richard.  I will never buy another laptop with integrated video card.  The 1100 is just too limited to play a few games I like even though the processor/memory can handle it.  Plus the shared memory eats up precious resources.

I like the 9200 and hope to purchase the new 9300 sometime this summer.

As for my 1100, the Celeron chip supposedly runs hot but I've never had problems with it.  The bottom gets hot when it's on my lap for hours at a time but that is to be expected.  Overall, pretty happy the 1100 when I think about the price paid.

The 5160 didn't/doesn't have the desktop P4.
It's the mobile P4 (MP4).

The mobile P4 is a modified desktop P4 with some added cooling/power conservation features. It runs hot.

The true mobile P4-m, which ended at 2.6 GHz, couldn't be pushed any further - and Intel needed a stopgap - hence, the mobile P4.

Got it.....the alphanumeric soup gets me sometimes.  I think the mobile P4 only has one quarter left
before it's gone.  Thanks for keeping me on the road of accuracy.............TD

I read an article on the new chipset from Intel - that the integrated graphics will perform much better and they will be able to be used for gaming even. We'll see but it would be nice. Of course, that will require buying more RAM and I doubt Dell will lower the price of the notebook to compensate for not putting in a video card. ;-)

I think the article was in PC Mag, but not sure.

Sure the graphics would be just as good as ATI, they said the same thing about the current chipset (845), and the graphics on that board are acceptable only for very old or graphics-light games.

I wish intel would get out of making video boards and concentrate on what they do best, which are processors that have marginally improved the past 2 years.  Let ATI & Nvidia run the graphics.

That CPU, the MP4, IS a desktop CPU with speed step added to lower the speed/MHz when it is not needed. Other than that is is built on the same core. That is why there has been so many problems the the heat output of it.

in mp4's there is not really much heat untill you do intensive work on it. any laptop even pm's get hot when doing intesive work. the p4 line and amd is actually better for gaming than the pm's. if pm was really a lot better then i think that we would have already seen an equivalent in desktop models by now
