Running Kerio firewall? 2.1.4 will do this.  There's a 2.1.2 that doesn't.

Also, you could set the sleep key in windows power control panel to be hibernate instead of sleep.  Then hit the hibernate keys and then unhibernate and it'll be back again.

Nope, not running that software. I have hibernation turned off. System remains active, display just refuses to come back on.

aeiron:

You may want to try configuring your BIOS settings to their defaults. To do this enter your system's BIOS Setup Program by pressing your F2 key during the boot process. Then press your Alt and "F" keys simultaneously. Save the changes and exit.

Approximately how recently did you first begin to experience this problem and do you remember making any hardware or software changes to your configuration directly previous to this first occurring? Click Start then Run, type MSCONFIG and click OK. The System Configuration Editor allows you to choose what loads as the system boots. Choose Selective Startup and remove all checks from the boxes, then click OK. When prompted to restart choose Yes. If this solves the problem, start inserting checks one at a time and then restarting to see if the problem reappears. In this manner you may be able to isolate the cause of the problem.

I'm familiar with msconfig and nothing starting up is causing this problem. I've ruled that out. BIOS is at defaults already.

Could the fact taht the LCD doesn't turn off when I close it be related? Cause it stays on after it's been closed.

Hmm..ok..I think I had the same problem.  My lid doesn't shut off on close and the screen wouldn't wake up sometimes.

I did a couple of things.  I think what's happening is somehow the machine is thinking one of the other "monitors" has taken over and it's displaying the video there even though nothing is attached via s-video or an external monitor.

Try this first, go into device manager, and disable the 2nd and 3rd monitors there.  I think that's what fixed me.  If I want to do s-video or ext monitor, I guess I'd need to reenable them.

I think I did a couple of other things that I don't remember exactly, but try this first.

Fn+F8 switches to the external connection, and hitting it again reinitializes the lcd.  It might turn it back on.  It is a BIOS level command.

My thing didn't work?

If that didn't work, try this:

Now how do I go about creating a binary registry key to disable twinview as
suggested in the FAQ which I copy here?

Create a binary registry key called 'TwinViewDisabled' to the value 1 in the
following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\System and Twinview should be disabled, preventing a second monitor from being detected.

Well?  Did you get it fixed yet?

Please post either way so that this info can be used to help others and the Dell support people.

Thanks

Lex,

I tried your fix (Disable the default monitors..) and so far it's working...  Thanks!!  It makes sense what your saying, however I don't have a docking station so this is just fine.. Thanks..

I've notice this happens when I use remote desktop, which is FUS, Fast User Switching in WindowsXP. Could be a microsoft or nvidia driver thing.
