Inspiron 1150 'Shuts off'

Question

Hi to all,   I have a daughter in college who has an Inspiron 1150 running a Celeron processor. Her complaint is that the laptop will 'shut of' after a couple of hours sitting or at times when it is in use. She then has to push the power switch to reboot the machine. It has only started to do this in the last month or so. The machine is 6 months old. This sounded like an overheating issue to me but I'm not sure at this point. The fan does seem to run most of the time . Whats the most likely problem here? I have not yet discussed this with the Dell technical service people. We do have the 'At home' service agreement, but I would like to do the initial troubleshooting before calling? I'm interested in any opinions/suggestions out there!   Steve

Check security - make sure the system is up to date on WIndows patches, antivirus, firewall and antispyware software. Check the fan for dust, or just clear it out with compressed air.

Another thing could be in the power management if you have not checked that yet. You said it happens about every two hours? Maybe it is set to turn off hard disks or entire computer?It is usually in properties.    ALSO. . . I have heard of improper grounded main boards that will shut off at random. Has she dropped it??

I was wondering if you ever found a solution to this problem since I also have an Inspiron 1150 that does the exact same thing. It is about 7 months old at this point and started to do this almost 2 months ago but would only do it once every couple of weeks, now it is turning off once every couple of hours.

Just wondering if you ever found the answer to the problem because I would be really interested in any help. Thanks a lot!
