Help with home network with 2350 router

Question

I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem I've been having with my home network. I am trying to set up a home network with a Dell Dimension connected to a 2350 router and an inspiron 600m. I am always able to connect to the internet from the desktop, but have continuous problems with the laptop. From a clean reset of the router, both the laptop and the desktop are able to connect to the internet without problems. However, once I disconnect and shut the laptop down, if I restart at a later time and try to connect to the internet, I get a message on the laptop saying that there is 'limited or no connectivity'. The Dell router shows that it is assigning an IP (192.168.2.3) to the laptop, but on the laptop itself I find that it is using a completely different address (169.254.88.124). If I reset the router and 'rebuild' everything from scratch, it works fine again. However, it will invariably fail at some point in the near future, and the cycle continues. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? I would appreciate any input that you guys have, as it is very annoying to have to repeatedly set everything up from start.

On the laptop, when it gets the autoconfiguration IP address (169.254.xxx.xxx) can you open a command prompt window and get a valid IP address (192.168.xxx.xxx) by typing ipconfig /release /renew ?

Hi Steve - thanks for the reply, this is the message I get when I try ipconfigure /releaes /renew:   'The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation'

As a troubleshooting step, try connecting the laptop to the router using a wired connection and see if the same thing happens. This might help us to determine if it is a software problem or a hardware problem.
