Understood, thanks. But I'm still not sure that the hard drive is NOT possbily part of the problem, and didn't want to have to possibly send it back a 2nd time.
Replied to Tech Support's email confirmation (case number), and added the new problem (that it's powering off by itself) and included my concerns about the hard drive. Will await their reply.
For those who *have* sent a hard drive back to Dell, what did you do to protect your info? It's not like have a ton of secrets, but what about the 200 emails archived in Outlook, the built-in Windows Auto-fill content, bookmarks etc. Yes, I would delete history and autofill and cache, but I just don't know what I might miss. Not that I'm mistrustful. Yes, it is that I'm mistrustful, LOL.
XP Pro comes with encyption if you need it ... there are other programs out there as well. Backup everything as if it is the harddrive you will be getting absolutely none of your emails back (along with everything else)

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately it's now a non-issue...the whole megillah crashed hard last night (unmountable_boot_volume) so in addition to the other problem, I'll be sending the hard drive along with the 8200, and will have no opportunity to save / delete / backup anything which wasn't already done.
That brings up a "we'll see" that will be answered when the laptop is returned, but here are the new questions:
1. If Dell reformats the hard drive, or simply gives me a new /refurb drive, do they install anything on it? I bought it with XP Pro, and had installed all the updates and SP1 + and SP2 while it was operating. So will / should the Depot re-install an updated version of the software I originally bought from Dell?
2. Same question applies to MS Office SB, which i purchased along with the computer and had updated all along. In other words, will they send it back to me with any / all of their original installations (or none, or currently updated versions of those)?
Not that there's anything I can do about it now, regardles of the answer. Just a curiosity / forboding, LOL. Thanks.
PS- are there any *other* settings changes that I should expect that might not be obvious that I should expect (and need to work around) when it's returned?
