Inspiron 8200 AC Adapter will not charge but will Sustain battery

Question

Hello,   A recent problem has occured...   Firsty my AC adapter will only work with a battery in the battery slot (not sure if this is the norm) The battery will not work without the AC adapter if the battery is in the primary slot. Secondary will work When the AC adapter is plugged in it will not charge the battery The System is not recognising the AC adapter and so always runs as though its on the Battery (Power issues).... but the battery isnt discharging Any help would be great

It could be the PA-9 power adapter, but I don't think so.  I had some similar problems on an Inspiron 8100 and the problem was the DC/DC charger board attached to the motherboard.  Dell will probably tell you that you need a new motherboard, which includes the charger board, but fortunately, you can find them individually for sale on eBay for about $10 to $30.  There are instructions somewhere on the Dell website for how to remove your keyboard, video card, etc and install the charger board.
