Alienware m14x won't display through display port
I got a new 2560x1440 monitor and hdmi doesn't display full resolution so I got a mini display port to display port cable to try and the monitor doesn't receive any signal at all. I recently got a new hard drive and clean installed so I'm not sure if theres a driver or something that I'm missing?

Did you in install the display driver and if so did you use the one from Dell. The no output has to be a driver issue or a driver setting.
The resolution could also be normal. Depending on your brand and make of video card it may only do full resolution on another monitor only when the laptop screen is turned off. If you run the display on both simultaneously then it will default to the lowest resolution of the two.
Read this and make sure you have all your settings correct:

Morblore makes a good point there :) .Make sure you use the DELL drivers only when installing the video drivers to avoid any software issues related to the Optimus Technology present on your system.

Where do I find the display driver? Are you referring to one for the monitor itself or for my laptop graphics card? Supposedly this laptop can support 2560x1440 resolution if you look at the bottom feature on this page www.geforce.com/.../features so I assumed display port would work fine but it's not working for me, and I just got an hdmi to dual link dvi like that site sort of says and it still only goes to 1080p.

HI again
Get the display driver for your laptop from the Dell site. Also, like I said before you may need to go into the settings and set it to display on the monitor only for it to jump up to the 2560x1440 resolution on the external monitor.
Lets say for example that your laptop has a resolution of 1024 x 768. Your external monitor has a resolution of 1920 x 1200. With many laptops ( not all ) if you run it off an external monitor and keep both screens on then it will default to the lowest resolution of the two monitors which would be 1024 x 768 in my example. It doesn't matter what the max resolution is. To get it to display at 1920 x 1200 you would need to disable the laptop monitor and only display on the external.
Not all systems and GPU's are limited this way however. For example my desktop with my GTX 680's can run multiple resolutions on multiple monitors but not all systems are capable of doing this. I'm not sure if yours can do this or not. So to test yours you should output only to the external monitor ( disable the laptop screen ) until you get your resolution working. Once you do that then switch it to dual mode and see if it drops the resolution.
Also, HDMI can do 2560 x 1440 resolutions so long as it's HDMI 1.4. The M14x does have 1.4 so it should work with the HDMI cable. You most likely just need to get the driver and settings right for it to work.

Hey,
Ya I see what you mean but my laptop is capable of it, I've run other monitor set ups with my laptop on at 1600x900 while i have a 1920x1080 monitor running as well, but in this case I have my laptop display disabled anyways. The only dell display drivers I see for my laptop are the video card ones and I have those updated.

I know this is long dead but I am having the same issue and not having any luck finding solutions. Were you ever able to resolve this?

That was quite a long time ago so I don't really remember actually, but I'm pretty sure I needed a powered display port cable to be able to power the monitor at the 1440p resolution and those cables cost over $100 at the time. So I didn't bother with the 1440p for a couple months till I got a new desktop which I was planning on getting anyways.
