Optiplex 745 CPU upgrade question

What is the fastest CPU that the 745 can handle?

Will it handle the 3xxx series Xeon CPU's?

  Quad Core udgradeability?

I bought one with a 915 P4D and want to have something better.

Thanks, Stan

Go to the www.dell.com site and build a 745. The list of processors that they offer are obviously supported. If the socket is the same, Xeon processors might work, but Dell has this tendency to have the bios only accept processors it knows instead of 'anything that works'. So unless Dell were to add Xeon's to the list I wouldn't expect them to work in the Optiplex range.

Currently the E6700 seems to be the fastest they offer. Most generic systems that support the E6700 will also support the X6800 and the Q6700 (quad core). I'm not sure this Dell system will support these though. If it does work a future bios may add support for them, but don't expect confirmation on this till this bios is actually released.

No Xeons
No Quad Cores

Core 2 Duo is the max

OH (explitive deleted)!!!

I was hoping someone tried it and got it to work.   MOST boards support the Quad cores.

The Xeons are more or less reboxed C2D's.

Just an update.

  i bought an Optiplex 745 with a P4D 2.8.

I pulled it out and dropped in an Intel Extreme QX6700  Quad Core and it worked perfectly.

  No error messages, no problems.

It runs and recognises all four cores and utilizes them appropriately.

  Just letting the community know.

Hey there, just wanted to let you guys know that tonight I was able to put in my QX6700 yes thats right Extreme Edition into my SFF Optiplex 745 and it works perfectly. I wish there was a better resource for me to add this information too but I hope this helps out people.

I'm sure that the QX6700 is the highest that it will support.

PS in a SFF the CPU fan will go nuts, Thankfully I keep it nice inside.

Cheers!

I ordered a brand new e6700 processor for my Optiplex 745 from newegg.com and it simply just won't work.  My old processor is a Pentium D 945 and when I reinstall it the machine works perfectly.  My Bios is at 2.6.4.  When the new e6700 is installed they machine powers up and all of the lights on the front panel come on, the fan spins up a bit fast, and the system won't post.  Alot of people are apparently using this processor so I can't imagine what is wrong with it.  Oh yeah by system is a Mini Tower.  Could it be the revision of the motherboard?  Rev. A00  Bad processor?

I see multiple threads on the same subject and will post this into an additional one so I apologize for the redundancy.

Thanks for any help in advance

Rick

No Wolfdale's or Yorkfield's.

E6700 is not going to work.

Lithography 45 nm

Conroe/Allendale C2D or Kentsfield Quads only.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 Kentsfield 2.66GHz  BX80562Q6700

Lithography 65 nm

Thank you very much for your reply.  Makes me wonder why so many people feel that they should work then.  I guess I just wasted $85.  Oh well.

Thanks again
