XFX GeForce FX 5500

I know this is a cheap card, but I have heard good things about it, for the price.  What do you guys think about it being installed in a dimension 2350

Thanks

For the best performance, make sure it has a 128-bit memory interface. Other than that, it's below low-end and extrodinarily outdated, but it's about the best you can do for those systems. (The Geforce 6200 might be better, as would a 5600 if you could find it still.)

Does anybody know if the card listed above can be used in the 2350

Thanks

Yes, BUT they are real hard to find.  The 5500 PCI card will be your best bet unless u can find the other two.

Hi.

I have a dell dimension 4550 with 80 GB HD and 1 GB RAM and a 2.4 Gig pent 4 processor. I wanted to boost my graphics a bit for gamming. I purchased the geforce fx 5500 PCI 256 Memory. I was under the impression that PCI was better then AGP when it comes to speed and performance. Is this true? ALso is this card good for this system? I had a NVIDIA 64 MB P73 AGP and it seems that it run almost as well!! I am stumped..... I added the extra 512 memory to get the 1 Gig AFTER buying the 256 Geforce because I was not getting the performance I expcted from the card and someone told me that I needed to buy extra memory to help the card to meet its potential. Well it helped a litttle but I wonder if I had my old Nvidia if it would have done the same? The new card looks impressive when looking at the card with the fan and neat colors but is it what I need? hould I have bought a AGP?? Does it matter what PCI slot I use?? As you see I am not very Savy when it comes to upgrading my own graphics.

Any help would be appreciated.

Steve

The Geforce 5500 is a terrible card that's below low-end. You didn't say what kind of card you had before, but if it was a Geforce 3 that would be about the same as a 5500.

You would want to buy an AGP card, not PCI. And you'd want a minimum of a Geforce 6600GT.

It was an invidia 64 MB P79 AGP that came with my dell 4550. So it is a horrible card huh???

And it is now in a PCI slot and works but not well.

Thanks, Steve

I Googled that number, and I THINK that may have been a Geforce 4 MX, which is really a Geforce 2. A 5500 is more like a Geforce 3, so it's better, but still not good.

The 5500 is not a terrible card. Its a low end card that is almost the only choice if you get the 32 bit 33mhz PCI version for Dimension and optiplex without AGP slot.

The AGP version is also a low end card but it works.

The MX4000 and the FX5200 and FX5500 with 64 bit video memory on the GPU are terrible cards.
As is the Radeon 9XXXSE series.

The FX5500 works fine with FEAR, Battlefield2, Farcry, World of Warcraft, and several other games.
Its not a screamer but its not a HORRIBLE card like the MX4000 is.

The card I had in my AGP slot was a NVIDIA MX 420 64 MB AGP X 4

I now have it back in and going to attempt to return the PCI 5500 Gforce I have and get a AGP. You think an AGP will make much difference as running the same card but in my PCI slot? My son runs half life 2 and would like faster and better graphics for the game. And also he has the game black and white and wants to be able to see fur and grass Etc. I thought this card would be able to do this but who knows??? What would be the best card for this computer? I guess more bang for my buck!!!

Thanks, Steve

If you compare the 5500 AGP to A 6600 AGP then its no contest.

The 6600 AGP is a much nicer card.

The 6200 AGP is a Horrible card like the MX4000

The 6200 is a horrible card, but it's still better than a 5500 from what we've heard. They're all incredibly outdated cards. (I mean the 5500 was super-low end back when it was launched years ago.)

A Geforce 5500 like I said is a TERRIBLE card now. It's below low end and years out of date. A Geforce 6600 like the one you listed is okay, but for just slightly more you can get a significantly more powerful 6600GT.

At Newegg, an AGP 6600GT goes for just $20 more than that eBay 6600.

Also note that it makes no difference how much RAM is on these low end video cards. A more powerful card with 128MB will always outperform a less powerful card with 256 or 512MB. It's not worth getting a card with 256MB until you get up into the range of a Geforce 6800GT.

Yeah, but on a scale with modern video cards where a Radeon x1900xt is a 100, a 5500 might be a 5, and a 6200 a 10.

Or something.

Better is a relative term. On a scale of 1 to 100 the FX5500 is A 92
and the 6200 is a 100.
