I received a HP Scanjet 5500c scanner for Christmas and it is having difficulty interfacing with my Dell 8200.  The copy utility works fine; but the Scan Document and Scan Picture options do not respond properly.  They cause the scanner software to lock-up and (get this) they create a repeated, periodic accessing of the floppy drive (approx once a second).  I have to reboot to get the floppy drive to shut up.

I spent nearly the entire day yesterday online with the HP folks trying various things, including at one point modifying the registry.  The seem to be stumped.  I was wondering if anyone else was having trouble with that scanner (or it's brother, the 4570c).

I have the factory installed USB 2 hub and I am using that.  I have also tried it in the standard USB 1.1 hubs and they have the same problem.

Need help.
