New Scanner Problems... Can't communicate with computer, unable to open TWAIN source

HELP!

I received a Canon 'CanoScan LiDE 30' scanner for Christmas.  I hooked everything up and loading the software.  When I went to test it for the first time, using the Photo software programs from the disk, it obviously sent a signal to the scanner.  I hear the scanner 'scanning' but instead of showing a picture on the screen to complete the scanning process.  I receive the following errors.

  1. "Cannot communicate with scanner.  Cable may be disconnected.  Check Status.
  2. Status: unavailable
  3. "Unable to open TWAIN source.  Please check connection"

This doesn't make sense because the computer sends the signal to the scanner to begin scanning but gets lost in the return or something.

After calling Canon and being walked through some troubleshooting, they told me that I needed to activate my Still Image Monitor or something like that.  Apparently executing the following file: 'stimon.exe' will turn it on and allow communication between the scanner and monitor.  The problem is that my computer doesn't have that file.  I can't find my Windows disk(s).  Anybody have any ideas?
