SP2 Error: Access is denied
I keep trying to install SP2 on my Dimension 8200 that has build 2600 on it. Almost halfway through the installation, it says access is denied, and proceeds to uninstall what it already has. On other sites that I have seen, they've told me to look in the setupapi.log file, and look for errors. This is what I found:
#-007 Deleting registry key HKCR\vnd.ms.radio
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied.
#E065 Parsing DelReg section [Product.Del.Reg] in "c:\c6aa4a6fc42a64a6ea7d24de91f2c0\i386\update\update.inf" failed. Error 5: Access is denied.
#E064 Parsing install section [ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install] in "c:\c6aa4a6fc42a64a6ea7d24de91f2c0\i386\update\update.inf" failed. Error 5: Access is denied.

(Of course, #'s are new lines)
I've fixed the permissions for the vnd.ms.radio already, but is there anything else that I have to fix that I'm not seeing in this?
Thanks,
Brad

Do a disk cleanup, clean temp internet files, empty recycle bin and defrag. Good standard maintenance and definitly worth doing now so that things are clean when you do your Service Pack 2 install. --> Restart computer.
Turn off your antivirus, make sure script blocking is disabled. Enable the windows firewall (right click on your connection in network places and choose protect with ICF) and disable your current firewall. If you have spybot run and choose advanced interface (under mode) and under tools go to resident and disable resident shield and tea timer.
Run the install if you downloaded it or windows update if you are doing it that way. It will take some time so be patient. Do not panic if things seem to stop. Get a sandwich or something. Just check back to see if you have to click something else.
When it finishes and asks to restart, choose no : I will restart later and then finish. Re enable your antivirus (but leave off script blocking) and firewall.
Restart PC. It will take a bit longer than normal on reboot , but not extremely long. It should finish with a prompt to enable automatic updates and verify your firewall and antivirus. If Norton antivirus, it may not properly interface so you may have to choose the do not monitor my antivirus it checks for updates itself.
Re enable spybot resident shield. It will warn of a new IE toolbar (which warns of sites trying to run active x or install things behind your back) and a lock of the blank.htm web page file to prevent its being replaced by coolwebsearch. Re enable script blocking in your antivirus.
One final step I like to do is clear the prefetch file . This will make sure windows does not waste time while booting looking for files which were replaced. I prefer using X-setup to do this, but you can just locate windows/ prefetch and delete the contents.
Launch Xsetup Choose classic interface and go to system=> file system => Windows prefetch => Clear prefetch
Then click the clear prefetch at upper right.
Good luck !

This can be caused by parts of the registry having insufficient access rights. Please see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article.
You receive an "Access is denied" error message when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=873148
Note, however, that as of 2004-09-01 this KB article is in error under step 3. You should look in the setupapi.log file instead of Svcpack.log. Svcpack.log does not list what registry keys have permission issues, but setupapi.log does (as referred in the SYMPTOMS section).
If you cannot see in setupapi.log at which registry key it fails, you need to enable Verbose logging. Please read the next subchapter, Service Pack 2 installation log files, on how to do that.
Alternatively:
In Windows XP Professional it may be better to just reset the security settings back to the defaults for all registry keys, as described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article.
How To Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313222
If you only want to reset the registry permissions, add this to the secedit command line:
Unfortunately Windows XP Home does not have secedit.

@Disabled, I had already tried that, and it wouldn't work. I posed the access errors from setupapi.log in the original post, asking if someone could tell me what they mean.

I've followed the steps to:
1) completely clean up my hard drive (defrag/temp file/Internet temp files/Disk cleanup)
2) "Unload" Symantec antivirus
3) Disable resident Spybot
4) Turn off the XP firewall
Still, I get the "Access Denied" error.
The errors in c:\windows\setupapi.log are as
One of the errors in the
#E065 Parsing DelReg section [Product.Del.Reg] in "c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\9ded4ee34a35fced0033d3e152a36e0e\update\update.inf" failed. Error 5: Access is denied.
#E064 Parsing install section [ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install] in "c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\9ded4ee34a35fced0033d3e152a36e0e\update\update.inf" failed. Error 5: Access is denied.
I've not made any changes to the Registry key(s) and permissions. I'm currently "patched" for SP1, and I'm running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. Can anyone offer some other avenues to pursue, short of re-installing XP? Thanks so much.
