Uninstalling Windows 2000
I've decided I want to upgrade my computer to XP, and I have the CD from Dell that can install it on a new computer. But since I already have 2000 installed, it's not allowing me to install XP over it. I don't care about losing all the files on my C drive(since I partitioned a seperate drive for the files I care about), and I have no idea how to remove W2000 from my computer so I can install XP(home). Can somebody please tell me how to remove it or tell me where to go to find out how? *I don't have the windows 2000 disk*

Here's a helpful site complete with screenshots: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_2kupgrade.asp
As always, it's better to do a clean install rather that an upgrade. To do that will require a 98/ME boot disk and our good friend, "FDISK". Here's a site that will walk you through "FDISK" and partitioning, along with an installation guide for XP:
http://radified.com/index2.html
Select the desired how-to's from the blue column on the left.
And, if that isn't enough, here's a site to help you configure the services that you really need now that you've crossed over to the "dark side" (XP, I mean
):
http://www.blackviper.com/
Select "Windows Service Configurations!" from the left-hand column. He too, offers a XP install guide.
*sad that another "2Ker" has been lured away by a pretty GUI
.

Ahhh, now we get to the REAL problem (whew!... thought we lost another one
).
All is not lost just because you installed W2K instead of XP on your Dell. Most, if not all, hardware drivers for either operating system are available from the Dell download section. It's just a matter of entering your Service Tag number, selecting a download category (all), selecting the operating system, the language, and clicking "Submit" (here's a little secret - if a requested driver isn't available in W2K, try the same device driver in XP; it will probably work just fine).
Now back to the problem...go to the Device Manager and insure that the modem is listed and has the correct driver installed. You could even try the troubleshooter for the modem, if you want. Next, create a new internet connection by using this link as a how-to: http://www.more.net/technical/win/2000dialup.html It's far easier to create a new connection than it is to fix a bad one.
Post back with any problems or error messages.
