Windows Vista Wireless Networking problems: Unidentified Network, Local Access Only

Hi all

This is one of the problems for Windows Vista Users: Wireless Network.
Im experiencing this problem, where you can connect to the Wireless Network, but you cannot use the Internet. It says its : Unidentified Network and Local Limited Acess only.

Im a both current XP and Vista user, it Wireless works perfect on XP, but on VISTA, it just creates problems over problems.

ive tried using Static IP, entering it all manually. still has problems.
One thing i do know its Vistas problem !!!!!!!!!!

If you would be a little more specific about the set-up of the network maybe someone could assist you sorting out your issues with wireless networking.

Vista + Wireless Network = working fine for me.

How is the Router set-up?

Are you using security WEP?

Can you ping the router?

Can you log into the routers web setup?

Are you running a Firewall?

If so is it configured properly?

Antivirus Software?

Can you see other computers on the network?

Are all PC's on the same workgroup?

Hi

Thats seems alot of complicated questions but heres some answers to it.

Router is set up as a WP2 - Personal encryption not WEP.

I can ping the router

With regards to Are all PC's on the same workgroup,
i belive it does not matter, as i dont actually want to create a network, just to solely use the internet via the Wireless Router.

No i cant log into routers web setup, as this cant be done wirelessly

Hope these help !!!!!

and this

This link is for XP but it has some good pointers in it.

Try a few things one at a time and lets see what happens.

1.) Turn off the encryption just to test this as a cause.

2.) Same with the firewall and Antivirus.

3.) Delete the network connection you have set-up already, then reboot and start over on setting it up.

4.) From a command prompt; Type: " ipconfig /release " press enter, then Type " ipconfig /renew " and press enter.

You should be able to log into the router from a wireless connection I do it all the time.

Here's a little more help--use the Network & Sharing Center to set up your network connection on the vista computer. Lots of good info there about how to set up the connection. If you still have trouble, try posting in the Wireless Networking forum.

If you have Mcafee thats your problem. I had the same thing. You need to shut off all Mcafee services other then the actual AV. I used to love Mcafee now I hate it! If I did not get 15 months of service with the new computer I would dump it in a flash for Trend Micro Ray

I had a similar problem with my new Dell XPS machine with Vista pre-loaded onto it. I could connect to the router with a cord, but the Netgear wireless adapter Dell sold me just couldn't seem to stay connected for more than a minute or two. That was strange because other computers could connect just fine to my Netgear wireless router.

Dell eventually solved the problem. Dell replaced my Netgear wireless adapter with a Belkin wireless adapter. Everything worked immediately as soon as we did that. Vista is pretty and may be the future of computing (only if Microsoft soon releases a major service pack imho), but it is a pain to work with. Vista just does not play well with wireless networks. If you use Vista, this is just something you have to accept.

Did you ever get it working?

I have found the opposite to be true. I have the 1390 wireless card and it has connected to everything I have thrown at it... With Zero Effort.
