Help with Wireless USB connection on My Dimenison

I have a Dimension XPS R400 with 128 Meg of Ram running Windows 98 and I am trying to hook up a D-Link USB Wireless connection to it. My laptop works on it fine. I installed the drivers, but when I hook up the USB connector I lock up. Any ideas?

Thanks

reslifetc,

Which particular D-Link USB adapter are you using?

I am using a D-Link DWL-122 USB adapter. I am actually using it right now on my laptop - to make sure it works. It works better than my PC Card. Any Ideas?

reslifetc,

Thank you for letting us know what USB NIC you are having problems with.  The DWL-122 is listed as being compatible with Windows 98.
1.  Did you have another NIC or wireless card in the system before you tried this USB NIC?
2.  Did you uninstall the drivers for it before installing the drivers for this NIC?
3.  Did you install the driver for this NIC before connecting it to the back of your computer?
4.  When the system locks up, does it display any error message?  If so, what is the error message?

1. No, this was the first NIC I tried to install on this computer
2. N/A
3. I installed the CD that came with it first (I believe). I called D-Link and they walked me through setting up the TCP\IP. They finally said that I need to update my bios or the NIC was bad, so I tried it on my laptop and it works great.
4. When the system locks up - the hourglass comes up and doesn't go away and no key strokes work - even crtl, alt, delete. The power light is light on the NIC and the Link light is flashing. Anything else for me to try?

reslifetc,

You can consider updating the BIOS for your system.  However, with an older system such as an XPS-R, updating the BIOS may not help you with this issue.  You can find the latest BIOS for your system (Version A13) at this link:

http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?cat=sup&subcat=dyd&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&k=XPSR_A13.EXE

Also, if you have any other USB devices attached to your computer, you should try your USB NIC with those other items disconnected and their software uninstalled.
