Linux Users,

http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.10/Issues/New_Conexant_Modem_Driver a driver for fedora is available in that link but untested by dell.

Thanks! that solved my problem which I was tearing myself to solve it. But that has a new problem, much less smaller now: I can't use the audio! It's somehow that the snd_hda_intel is overwritten and pulseaudio is messed up with it; xine engine can not initiate audio. Any suggestions? (Thanks!)

Thanks bongki55 I took a deep look @ the problem, and saw problem is because of pulseaudio system, not the hsfmodem. It works just fine 4 me.

Actually they've now posted a generic driver: http://linux.dell.com/files/ubuntu/modem-drivers/hsf/

Perhaps it was there all along and I didn't notice. This is a non-crippled oem licensed version of the package sold by linuxant.

A note to Gentoo users, if you want to use this driver use the alsa drivers in the kernel and not the alsa-drivers ebuild (doesn't seem to be compatible).

I use fedora 8, and when I installed the modem driver, After then, I can not change any network properties with system-config-network and the tui one, since whenever I want to save the status, system-config-network crashes with this (This is a bug backtrace):

If anyone could help, or tell me which forum and where is the best I can post these, I would be delighted.

I have the Dell 1420n.  Upgraded to 7.10 from 7.04, before the upgrade everything worked fine. After, all but the modem worked. I expected this and then installed the new drivers from Dell. The sound card quit at that time and would not restart. The modem still was not working. I then removed the back port modules as per Dell and then the wireless stopped. The wireless seems to not even load or even to be recognized. There is no wireless setup in the network manager. I have since reloaded the backport modules, with no help.  Still no Modem, Wifi, or sound! Thanks.

I have a inspiron 640m which is really unsupported by dell when it comes to linux. As suggested by the dell website I clean installed 7.10 after backup of my homefolder/partition.Now everything is working including the conexant driver, wireless and sound.I also did not have to modify the graphics driver in order to get the 1024x800 resolution. My suggestion is to clean install 7.10.Backup all the home folder in 7.04. Also use aptoncd to backup the packages that you downloaded in 7.04 most importly the plugins for video and multimedia(although you can always install them once 7.10 is up) Good Luck!

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I have thought about doing that, but was dragging my feet, as it seems I aways forget to copy something. That was back in the windows days so maybe I'll get lucky this time.

For Karien, I tried PClinuxOS live cd and used the rpm file of the conexant modem provided by dell with no problem. Pclinuxos is mandriva based not fedora...

Thanks bongski, the problem (so far I can see) is with pulseaudio module; Fedora is the first distribution to use it default. Other distributions are going to use it in near future, so they would have this problem too, so instead of changing the distribution, it IS a better idea to correct the modem driver. THe problem occurs when driver recompiles audio module and installes it, which pulseaudio is not configured to use it properly, so I ask linuxant (or possibly other driver staff) to update their driver.

Hi Since I have kubuntu 7.10, I tried the version of the driver as reported here: http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.10/Issues/New_Conexant_Modem_Driver but this makes my soundcard stop working (after reboot); besides the modem itself does not seem to work at all... during the installation I got this: Warning: no device detected by hsf driver - HDA modems may require reboot Note: HDA support not compiled in the driver (requires a 2.6.16 or later kernel) Note: kernel module snd-via82xx-modem overridden by hsfmc97via Note: kernel module snd-intel8x0m overridden by hsfmc97ich hsfmc97sis Note: kernel module snd-atiixp-modem overridden by hsfmc97ati I don't know whether this is due to linux-backports-modules which I had to install to make the sound card work (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gutsy_Intel_HD_Audio_Controller). If I remove the hsf deb package the sound card goes back to life. Is there any way to solve this issue? thanks in advance Lore

(sorry, let me repost this with correct carriage returns)

Hi

Since I have kubuntu 7.10, I tried the version of the driver as reported here: http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.10/Issues/New_Conexant_Modem_Driver but this makes my soundcard stop working (after reboot);

besides the modem itself does not seem to work at all...

during the installation I got this:

Warning: no device detected by hsf driver - HDA modems may require reboot

Note: HDA support not compiled in the driver (requires a 2.6.16 or later kernel)

Note: kernel module snd-via82xx-modem overridden by hsfmc97via
Note: kernel module snd-intel8x0m overridden by hsfmc97ich hsfmc97sis
Note: kernel module snd-atiixp-modem overridden by hsfmc97ati

I don't know whether this is due to linux-backports-modules which I had to install to make the sound card work (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gutsy_Intel_HD_Audio_Controller).

If I remove the hsf deb package the sound card goes back to life.

Is there any way to solve this issue?

thanks in advance
Lore
