Did you look in the Windows Components? If it does not show there, you will have to edit the c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf file to get it to show. You must remove the word hide (and ONLY that word; remove NO commas), from the appropriate line in sysoc.inf; I just used Search and Replace to remove all instance of the word (Search For: hide with the Replace left blank). Even then you cannot remove the application, just some short cuts; more than in any prior version of Windows IE is an integral part of XP. BUT, if for some reason some of those short cuts have disappeared, that may explain your error message with respect to downloading the patch. So, two suggestions; first, after editing sysoc.inf, if necessary, then remove and re-install the shortcuts via Add and Remove Programs/Windows Components. Secondly, if that does not solve the problem, run sfc (from Start|Run); some key file may have become corrupted or deleted; sfc will restore any such file. You must be logged on as Administrator to run sfc.
XP is different--IE 6 is not listed except as "remove Desktop item" in Window's components. You don't want to mess with the registry on this. Make sure you are disabling virus checker before going to Windows Update and let WU tell you what you need. You can choose "Show installed updates" to see what you already have. XP can update IE automatically when you connect to the Internet, so you might already have what you're trying to download.

Yes, it is there (at least in XP Pro; I do not know about XP Home) both in c:\windows\system32 AND in the dllcache. You need to be logged on as Administrator not just with Administrative Permissions (or so I have read on the Microsoft boards from one of the MVPs over there).
