I have an E510.

The E510 and identical 5150 will accept up to a D945  processor.  This is well documented on this forum.   You can't install one of the later Core Duo's or a Quad processor.  Ther were several part number motherboards used in these models.  If you have the 0HJ054 motherboard you can upgrade to the D945 (or other D processors but not the D960) without any issues.  On other part number motherboards the upgraded CPU's will work but you will always get an "incompatible CPU" at power on and will have to press F1 to continue the boot up.

The E510 motherboard is a BTX style and has a Dell proprietary and undocumented front panel connector, thus only an E510 motherboard will fit an work.

The Dell supplied Windows XP will only install on a Dell motherboard, if you decide to build a new system and reuse what you can from the old E510 (basically nothing) you will need a new copy of Windows.

Is it worth it or am I throwing money away? I have upgraded the ram to 4 gb I upgraded my video card but still when I play starcraft 2 it lags hard core durring battles and that's on the lowest setting I don't need to play on ultra but high to mid settings would be nice..... The cpu is my last option.... Is it worth upgrading?

Thanks again

I upgraded mine from the original D805 to a D925 and to be truthful it was a waste of $$ as I saw no difference.  I don't think upgrading the CPU will help your gaming.  You are going to have to get a new computer and if you want to play games the only new Dell I would recommend, other than the Alienware which are gaming PC's, would be the XPS8300.

Memory and the Video card are the two best bangs for the buck for gaming on this PC.

My E510 isn't used for much, it's main job is interface for my Wife's Emboidery machine and is used to transfer embroidery patters to her Singer Embroidery machine.  I have a home recording studio and needed something to run Windows 7 64 bit.  I built a new PC with a retail Intel motherboard and a Q6600 quad core CPU, but even this is now "old technology".
