low virtual memory

Question

I have 512 mb ram so i have plenty of ram and i have win xp.  everytime i start and try to run ares p2p or open a program i get a warning saying low virtual memory more is being added, sometimes if i don't immediately close these programs my computer restarts.  when i get this message my pf usage maxes out on my taskbar.  i already know how to changing my virtual memory size and have upped it to over 2x my ram but still no luck and i have run adaware which got rid of spoyware.  i have symantec antivirus.  anyone out there  have the same problem.  not sure if maybe its some kind of memory leak  whatever that is or a corrupt paging file or maybe even some kind of worm or virus.  if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.  thanks
