Stop using standby. It eventually fails on desktop systems.

standby is a pain, but ususally it is a driver issue with your keyboard or mouse. You can just stop using it by changing your power options from the control panel, but that's just the symptom. The problem is a driver.
What kind of Keyboard? U can do a manual standby by going through the same steps as you would in restarting or shutting down except selecting standby. To reactivate the computer, dont move the mouse or keyboard but instead press the power button on your tower which will be flashing as it is in standby mode. This forces a standby mode, irrespective of the false signals the keyboard or mouse is sending to the OS. This was a problem with Dell Natural (Silitek) keyboards a few years back.
