Latitude C610 display problems

Hi all,

Newbie here!

I'm caught in a maze of information.

A friend of mine purchased a Dell Lat C610 laptop.
She bought from a government contractor surplus house.
The HD was wiped clean to Gov standards (DOD),
and sold without an operating system.

She was able to obtain a copy of Win98 SE from her brother
until she gets XP.

I installed Win98 SE on a machine designed for win2k at a min.
I got the software installed, but the display is off quite a bit.
I get two choices for the display, 2 colors and 16 colors.
Neither choice suits the proper display on the machine.

For those in the know, 16 colors give you a small screen and when extended,
displays a dull and blurry screen.
The 2 color display gives you the same small screen and a black and white display.

How and or where can I find the proper drivers for this machine?
The Gov. Surplus contractor had no doc's or disks to go with the laptop.
The only other items were a brand spanking new carrying case, the power cord, the module CD-Rom and Floppy disk cartridges.

I know where the downloads and drivers are for Dell, but which ones,
are for the Lat C610 laptop? There seems to be a variety of them.

The current set-up also can't locate the modem either, any tips on finding it,
with Utilities or drivers for that too?

I tried to find the specs that would identify the Mfg of the components,
that way I could get the drivers from them The only specs I found was a page,
that showed how to take a machine apart.

I also tried to search the archives, for previous posts.
All I found were stories about XP setups and searches for drivers.

Sorry for the long post.

Any help would be welcome.

Thanks again

Hi,

Go to the C610 downloads. you need a video driver, not a display driver. The modem could be one of a few brands, look under the door on the bottom and see what brand it is. It is the small card held in with 2 screws. Apart from a wireless, all the other drivers should be right. [ if there are 98 drivers there ! ]

                                                                           Regards Chris

Thanks Chris,

I think the click reply sign on later method, got me an additional post floating around out there some where. Just another mistake, by me!

Thanks for pointing out the right type of drivers for me.
As for the Modem,
I'll take a look down under!

Thanks again!

Trybry
Did you get the drivers you needed to change the screen resolution? I've not been able to get Dell video drivers to install.

Hi,

Are we both talking about same Win98 SE, on a 2K base Op Sys., C610 Lat. Machine?

Dell drivers catalogs are great.

The Mfg of those drivers (ATI) made this a little tricky.

After a few failures,

I started wildly trying combinations until the problem resolved itself.

Are you getting any error messages?

I can't remember, if the error message read, "could not install or find ATI drivers".

If memory serves me right, it's a zip prog, check back into the zip pkg, contents or folder and try to install the driver. I believe the zip contents include 2 set up programs. I tried both in varying orders.

Once I got past that, the prog loaded and everything works fine.

Be prepared for a bulky looking screen display mgr. (one with many tabs. That is once you open the program from control panel.

Screens are ok, display is great.

Getting ATI to install completely, is your only challenge.

Good luck!y

PS. - Let me know what your exact problem is or what your error messages are.
I'll be releasing the machine back to my friend soon and will have no access to it.
That is until something goes wrong.

I also want to thank all who helped in this forum.
So, far by a wide margin, Dell customer service and forums are second to none!
I thought, I'd be a Toshiba man for life, but maybe my next wife (computer), may be a Dell.
