Mouse inoperable after sleep mode

Sometimes when my Dell Studio XPS goes into sleep mode, requiring me to enter my password again, the USB mouse stops working.

I've had to restart the machine to regain mouse access, which is a big pain.

Is there any other way to make the mouse work again after sleep mode?

Always mention your exact model computer and operating system. Check the Device Manager, Mouse power management tab and make sure 'Allow this device to wake computer is selected.'  Unplugging the mouse and plugging it in again while the computer is on should wake the mouse, but you should not have to do that.

My machine is a Studio XPS 1645 with Windows 7 Home edition.  The Device Manager says the mouse is working properly, but it is not.  Unplugging and replugging doesn't make it work.  In fact, none of the USB devices attached externally are working.
